Arsenal Identify 24-goal Hitman as Their New Striker Option: Ideal Replacement For Aubameyang?

Darwin Nunez, Arsenal

Arsenal are desperate to sign a new striker in the summer and Darwin Nunez has been killing it this season. According to Express, the Gunners are considering Nunez as an option to recruit in the summer. Arsenal parted ways with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who joined Barcelona in January while Lacazette will be out of contract very soon and is struggling to provide goals.

Signing a striker remains a top priority for Arsenal this summer. There are several options Arsenal has to choose from like Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowksi but they could be tough to get. Arsenal tried signing a striker in January but failed in their efforts. However, they now have a perfect alternative and he is currently playing for Benfica.

Darwin Nunez has scored 24 goals and has also assisted twice in the 31 appearances he has made this season in all competitions(stats via whoscored). He is currently one of the best goal-scoring strikers in Europe with many clubs still interested in his services. The 22-year-old forward also helped Benfica beat Ajax by scoring the only goal in the second leg to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

How Can Darwin Nunez Help Arsenal?

Nunez is a very intelligent striker with great positional awareness. Not only does he gets in good positions to score the goal, but also his runs act as a decoy which creates spaces for his teammates to score. He also has a great athletic build which makes him a good striker to play crosses to. Moreover, he is also good at dribbling and has the physical prowess which helps him get away from defenders.

Nunez mostly likes to cut inside from the left-hand side. He tends to go to the left which allows him to get on the ball and take a shot while cutting inside. He is also very good at taking shots from a distance. Most importantly, he uses both his feet to finish which is one of the best attributes for a striker.

Lacazette has been performing well for Arsenal in recent weeks but he still rarely gets on the scoresheet. However, with Darwin Nunez, Arsenal will rack up more goals with the help of Odegaard and Saka’s chance creation. Nunez is also extremely unselfish but many may doubt this after just seeing two assists on his name this season.

Should Arsenal Go For The Uruguayan In The Summer?

Quite obviously, Darwin Nunez ranks first for the number of goals he has scored (20) and the number of goals he scores per 90 (1.20) in the Primeira Liga this season. He has taken 35 shots on target which is the highest in the league and takes 3.72 shots per 90 which is also the third-best in the league. His goal per shot ratio is 0.27 which is the fourth-best in the league and ranks first in taking shots on target per 90 with 2.10 shots (stats via fbref).

All of these statistics show how important a player he has become for Benfica at just the age of 22. He could step up at the country level to replace Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez. Both the strikers are also the best strikers of their generation and Nunez also has the potential to be like them in the future.

Although Benfica could demand a lot of money, Darwin Nunez could still be worth that much money as he is a guaranteed goal-scorer. Arsenal only has to support the striker as he may take some time to adjust to new surroundings. However, he can thrive when he will be surrounded by a few of the best youngsters and chance creators in the Premier League.
