David Dein Calls Out Arsenal Hierarchy on the One Major Mistake They Made After Arsene Wenger Stepped Down

David Dein, ambassador of the PL, thinks Arsenal made a “huge mistake” when the Gunners’ heirarchy let Arsene Wenger leave in 2018 without offering him a new role at Emirates.

Arsene Wenger, one of the world’s most elite managers, stepped down as Arsenal boss in 2018. He left behind a legacy of 22 years and has since cut off all ties with the North London club. Having turned down all offers leading him to management, the 72-year-old is currently working as FIFA’s chief of global football development.

Meanwhile, Dein, who served as Arsenal Vice-Chairman from 1983-2007, has heavily criticised the club for leaving Wenger astray without handing him a crucial role within the club’s hierarchy. Speaking at a Twinning Project event at the London Palladium, he said:

“Without being too critical of anybody, I think the club made a huge mistake.”

“As the song goes, there is only one Arsene Wenger. They should have found a place for him within the organisation, make him chairman, make him whatever it is.”

“And I think what rankles is the fact that personally, and I will say this openly, that whoever made the decision did not think he was good enough for Arsenal, but yet he is good enough to be head of global football development for the world. Frankly, I don’t understand it.”

Wenger still seems to have a knack for management and can possibly return to managing a club in the future, but as of now, he is focused on the projects with FIFA. Speaking at the UK premiere of his movie – “Arsene Wenger: Invincible”, the Frenchman said:

“I am crazy, I am crazy enough to be crazy and to make a crazy decision. But overall, I would say no, I am determined at the moment not to do it – maybe a national team at some stage for a term.

“At the moment, I am involved in projects with FIFA and want to get to the end of it, yesterday we launched an academy online to give a chance to everybody in the world to develop as a football player – that is, for me, more useful now.”

“I made one thousand two hundred and thirty five games for Arsenal, and overall in my career two thousand games – if I manage ten more it will not change my life.”

Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta is a huge admirer of Wenger, having played under his guidance and wants him to take a pivotal role in the club. A decision like this would also go down pretty well with the fans, the Frenchman being a popular figure at the Emirates.

Moreover, Arteta and Wenger working together could be very beneficial to the club. What is your opinion regarding Wenger’s possible return to Arsenal as a member of the hierarchy? Is David Dein right about Arsenal making a mistake by cutting ties with Wenger?
