There have been references to his inconsistencies and inability to defend at the highest level but alternatively, others have praised his ability to help others and lead the side.
David Luiz, who came to Arsenal in a last ditch signing last summer hasn’t had the season he would have liked and as a result Arsenal may be willing to let him go in his first and possibly last season in north London.
Luiz recently announced his intentions to play for Benfica before retiring and it appears Arsenal might help the player make that wish come true sooner rather than later.
The Brazilian was drafted in to patch up the gunners leaky defence with his vast levels of experience but it simply hasn’t worked out.
Arsenal just kept shipping goals even with David Luiz and he was regularly exposed for his lack of pace in the English Premier League.
The £8m deal left many Arsenal fans having a WTF moment because of his age. More importantly, it’s generally accepted that if Chelsea are willing to let a player go then their sell buy date must be up.
Arsenal haven’t really done well with any deal involving players from Stanford Bridge and Petr Cech’s mediocre spell between the sticks showed that Abramovich had robbed the gunners of a cool £10m.
Nervous fans are now anticipating the arrival of Willian from Chelsea, who at least won’t cost a massive fee but may flounder the same way as Cech and Luiz.
Under Arteta the performances of a number of players have improved including the Brazilian defender but he isn’t an ideal partner for Saliba next season and I expect him to be wearing Benfica colours before too long.
Perhaps Arsenal can resist the Chelsea hoodoo for a few years now due to a number of academy prospects knocking on the door of the first team.

Either that or we could change the name of the club to Arsea or Chelsnal to incorporate our love of the unwanted and discarded players from the west London club.
If David Luiz stays he would suffer the indignity of being second or third choice behind Mari, Chambers and Mavropanos or whoever they decide to bring in.
Sokratis, Mustafi and Holding are all said to be up for transfer in the summer with none of them able to command a slot with any degree of confidence.
On the speculation over his future Luiz said :
“I have already spoken with Luis Filipe Vieira. It will happen if the President permits it and fans want me back.
To be able to wear that jersey again and enter the stadium is worth more than many trophies.”
All the indicators suggest this is a deal that is almost 99% going to happen with all three parties happy with the outcome. That doesn’t happen often.
