BREAKING NEWS | David De Gea Sensationally Agrees to Sign a New Long Term Contract But There is a Huge Catch

De Gea, David De Gea

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is interested in signing a new contract to stay at the club, according to reports.

The Spaniard is United’s most prized asset and has been a key player for them for years now. However, negotiations over a new contract have been far from smooth sailing.

Talks regarding an extension have been brought up in the past, but no progress has been made so far. The stalling was due to the insecurity about where United were headed and whether they had it in them to challenge for major honors once more. A glimmer of hope seemed to sneak through the crevices under Jose Mourinho, until everything spiraled horribly out of control at the start of this season.

It lead to a number of key players questioning their futures at the club under the manager. De Gea was one of them. Reports suggested he was unhappy with life under the Mourinho regime. At one point, there seemed to be a real possibility that he would leave the club on a free transfer too. United by no means were ready to let this happen, and triggered a one-year extension clause in his current deal.

He is contractually tied to the club till at least 2020 now, but there is still a chance he may run his contract down and leave for free.

However, if reports in the Daily Mail are true, there seems to be a breakthrough. De Gea is said to be willing to sign a new contract and stay at the club. There is a catch, though. The 28-year-old will only listen to offers that will see his wages bumped up to £300,000 a week including bonuses.

That being said, De Gea has every right to dictate his own terms. The keeper has won the club’s Player of the Year trophy in four of the last five seasons. He is invaluable to the club and it would be a ridiculously hard task to replace him. He is among the best in the world in their respective positions, so why should he be treated any less than they are?

The United board will certainly understand how important De Gea is to the team. His latest man-of-the match display against Tottenham was just another reminder as to why they need to tie him down to a new contract as soon as possible.
