Manchester United have been linked with various defenders for the majority of the transfer window, with Toby Alderweireld and new England star Harry Maguire being the most linked to old Trafford. Recently the name topping the charts has been the German defender Jerome Boateng, who has also been top target of French giants PSG.

Reports suggests that Bayern Munich are willing to listen to offers in the region of in between £45m and £54m for the defender. New Bayern manager Niko Kovac however, expects defender to stay.
“I know Jerome quite well and I’m confident that he will stay with Bayern,”
“I know that Thomas Tuchel is still looking for one or two good players, maybe he will look at us, but it will not be easy to get our players.”

United have been considering a move for top quality center-half for the most part of the transfer window. They had the second best defence in the league last season, conceding just 28 goals, one more than their arch rivals City. However, what United have been lacking is consistency at the back, manager Jose Mourinho has used 7 different players in defence, most notably Ashley Young as make shift left back.
Mourinho had signed two defenders after his arrival at United. Eric Bailly was signed in 2016 who has proven to be a rock in defence, arguably the best defender in the current squad and Victor Lindelöf.
Latter was signed in the January transfer window last season but he has taken some time settling to the pace and physicality of the English Premier league. United started out well last season with Phil Jones and Eric Bailly at the back before former getting injured in the away game at Huddersfield.

As a defender there has never been a doubt about the quality and class of Boateng but in the last couple of seasons he has had his injury problems. With recurring hamstring problems which have reduced his playing time considerably, and with him approaching 30.
Bayern having a young centre-half in Nicolas Sule who is putting in some stellar performances and pushing for a starting spot, it might be better to cash in on Boateng. He was really poor for Germany at the World cup in Russia, and was much criticized for being sent off against Sweden.
He was sluggish on the ball and lacked his discipline, often being caught off-position, driving into midfield and shooting from distance with his weaker foot.

spacer height=”30px”]Signing Boateng could prove really beneficial for United. United are in dire need of a leader on the field, with Boateng at the back United might just get the leader they need. The leader who is capable of marshalling the defence, as he has been doing down the years for Germany and Bayern.
Post the Vidic-Ferdinand era, moreover United also haven’t had a settled duo at the back since Mourinho’s arrival. However, it would be quite a gamble on United’s part if they went in full bounty for Boateng, for a player who is on a downward curve in his career and picking up frequent injuries.
