MASSIVE | These Are The Players Arsenal Are Looking At To Revamp Their Defensive Malfunctions

Manolas, Manolas linked to Arsenal, Saliba, Tagliafico, Kannemann

As the transfer window draws near, many potential candidates will pop out and be linked to Arsenal. Few such names such as Kostas Manolas, Walter Kannemann, Nicolas Tagliafico, William Saliba are already been linked to possibly land at the Emirates Stadium.

It’s typical of the press to pick names out of thin air when it comes to Arsenal in a transfer window. It’s even more exciting when it comes to the defensive positions, with Mustafi likely to leave for Italy for a knockdown fee and Koscielny’s position unknown.

Nothings ever simple at Arsenal and injuries to Holding, Mavropanos and Bellerin have added extra spice to the mix.

Scampering journalists are consulting their current copy of buy, sell or swap, thumbing its pages for likely candidates to plug the obvious holes in the Gunners backline.

We’ve had Argentinian Walter Kannemann (28), who currently plays for Brazilian club Gremio, a decent candidate at a decent price, around £10.5m.

Then, we’ve had Saint-Etienne’s 18-year-old defender William Saliba for somewhere between £26-£30m, but it seems odd that Emery would pair the youngster with Sokratis or Koscielny.

Perhaps, he could form an experimental pairing with Rob Holding, who knows. It’s just nice to have a fresh name in the pot that we can look up on YouTube or Wikipedia.

We can always rely on the press to provide a name with which we are already familiar and that can be dusted off in a transfer window emergency.

Enter Roma’s Greek defender Kostas Manolas, who you may recall was almost definitely a possibility last season and I think the year before that. Perhaps, Unai Emery should do a version of Freddie Mercury’s ‘The Great Pretender’, jiggle the words slightly and commence singing:

“ Oh yes, I buy Greek defenders!”

For it seems that any defender that happens to be in or around the the East Mediterranean region, that has touched, looked at or is in possession of a football could potentially be an Arsenal target.

Not that Manolas isn’t good, he is. Not that he hasn’t got more defensive ability in his little toe than the outgoing Mustafi. He has but £30m plus for a 27 year old ?

Of course, there will be other names, we are just warming up this transfer window. Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico, is a name that will feature in stories concerning Arsenal and Manchester United.

Ornstein Lied: Why Arsenal Have More Than £40m Transfer Funds

No doubt Djene Dakonam, Nikola Milinković, Ibrahima Konate and Ben Chilwell could all follow in the coming weeks and we will offer considered opinion based on Stan Kroenke’s unwillingness to spend.

Which basically means any figure above £12m may be a problem, thus eliminating 80% of all the suggested candidates immediately.

We’ll keep you posted.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
