This Player Is Manchester United’s Glorious New Hero This Season

Diogo Dalot Manchester United

Diogo Dalot is truly the hero of United this season. Fans are much enthused after the 19-year-old Portuguese right back’s recent showing for the Red Devils against Claudio Ranieri’s Fulham side.

Since the departure of club legend Gary Neville in 2011, it had taken almost eight years for another natural right back to grace the stage at Old Trafford. Much like fans themselves, José Mourinho too is excited about the youngster’s arrival on the scene.

Many times this season, Mourinho had to settle between the versatile Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and out of favour United captain Antonio Valencia for playing the right back role.

It is worth noting that none of these three players are natural right backs who can offer a substantial attacking threat like what Dalot currently offers to the team.

Besides, Young and Valencia have already crossed the 30 age mark and may have reached the limelight of their careers, which makes the £19 million summer acquisition from Porto a vital one for both the club and Mourinho.

Back in June, United were willing to pay up to two million pounds more than the asking price to secure Dalot’s signature. This in itself showed how much the club valued him at the time.

Mourinho and United need to be applauded for showing faith in the 19 year old teenager despite the fact that his knee injury ruled him out for the next four months.

After the impressive performance against Fulham, Mourinho believes that United were rightly rewarded for putting their trust in Dalot. Juan Mata, one of the players who featured in the win against Fulham and also scored his 50th Premier League goal, was hopeful that Dalot would be a United regular in the future.

Mata said to MUTV,

“Diogo Dalot a very good lad, came with a knee injury but he’s a good guy and I’m happy he is finding his feet if he is lucky with injuries he can be a very good player.”

There were plenty of good things on offer from Dalot in the Fulham match. According to Opta, out of the eight crosses he provided, four were considered capable of creating a goal-scoring opportunity.

Opta further revealed that he made three key passes which shows his ability to find spaces despite being a full back.

Other than this, what caught the eye of the supporters was his eagerness to get on the ball and make those incisive runs into the opposition territory.

All this will be music to United fans and last season’s talisman Romelu Lukaku, who failed to reach expected levels this season.

Having only scored six goals in the Premier League so far, Lukaku will be hoping that the attacking outlet provided by Dalot be enough to recover his lost form.

Moreover, it would be interesting to see if the Portuguese youngster can reproduce the same form in the North West derby on Sunday at Anfield.
