Arsenal in Contact With the Representatives of Former Premier League Star | Will it be a Sensible Move?

Eden Hazard, Arsenal

Eden Hazard appears as the latest name on the wish-list of Arsenal, or at least that is what the rumour mill has churned out this time as the Gunners continue to be linked to players from across the world. The Belgian wizard is the second Real Madrid player to be linked with a move to North London in recent weeks. Spaniard Marco Asensio has also been touted as a possible addition to Mikel Arteta’s side.

Real Madrid parted with a handsome £89 million to bring Hazard to the Bernabeu in 2019. However, the Belgian playmaker has mustered just 6 goals and 7 assists in 65 games for the Los Blancos in three years.

This season, the former Lille winger has managed a solitary goal and just 2 assists from under 1000 minutes of playing time (stats via Transfermarkt). He has missed a total of 68 games due to 16 separate injuries or illnesses since moving to the Spanish capital.

Now 31, the Belgian is reportedly looking for a way out of Madrid. According to Foot Mercato (via The Mirror), Arsenal have already held talks with the the representatives of Eden Hazard over a possible summer move. The Gunners are interested in bringing Hazard back to the Premier League on a loan deal, with an option to buy.

Spanish outlet AS report that Arsenal are “confident” of signing Eden Hazard, should Real sanction the transfer. Los Blancos are looking to clear out several big names in the summer as part of a squad revamp and the former Chelsea winger falls into that category.

Real Madrid reportedly will hold out for a bid of around £33.5m to minimise their loss on the sale. However, the two clubs have a healthy relationship owing to the transfers of Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard in the past. This gives the Gunners some assurance to seal a deal.

Arsenal’s links to Hazard are a little baffling. The move is questionable and could cause more problems than solutions:

  1. Since leaving the Premier League, Hazard has been plagued by injuries. The Belgian has struggled for consistency and confidence. His signing would go against all the good work done by Edu in the 2021 summer transfer window.
  2. Hazard does not provide Arteta the profile required in the front line. Arsenal currently lack a goal-scorer to add the finishing touches to the Gunners’ game. The former Chelsea man is a creative playmaker who generally enjoys a greater amount of positional freedom. Arsenal should ideally be looking to invest the reported fee in luring a striker to the Emirates.
  3. Even if Hazard does find form, it would mean that either one of Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith Rowe or Bukayo Saka are relegated to the bench. This could hinder the development of Arsenal’s best youngsters in exchange for short-sighted benefits.

  1. On a free transfer for $100,000 per week, Hazard is worth a gamble. For $33 million, regardless of salary, no.

Arsenal need center forwards, central midfielders, and fullbacks, not over priced reserve wide players.
