Manchester United Eyeing Talented €50 million FC Porto Right Back With January Transfer Window To Open In Few Weeks

Eder, Arsedevils

Manchester United are said to be interested in triggering the release clause of Porto defender Eder Militao. Jose Mourinho is seeking defensive reinforcements as his time at Old Trafford has come under severe scrutiny in the previous weeks. The Sunday Times report that United could trigger the €50 million (£45m) release clause for the Brazilian defender.

Eder Militao, mainly a right back can also play as a central defender or a defensive midfielder. Eder, 20 , has appeared in 14 games for Porto all season scoring 1 goal.

The interest in Eder Militao comes after Napoli rejected a €90 million for Kalidou Koulibaly in an attempt to lure him to Old Trafford. Koulibaly was high up on the Red Devils’ shortlist throughout the summer and with United recent defensive woes, the rumors became strong.

Victor Lindelof is out until Christsmas, while Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have niggles and hence defensive reinforcements are required. Eder recently was tied down with a new contract by Porto keeping him at the Estádio do Dragão till 2023 after arriving from Sao Paolo.

According to the emerging reports, Jose Mourinho could force the United board to trigger the release clause of the 20 year old. Going after Eder instead of Koulibaly may prove to be masterstroke considering and comparing the age of two players. Koulibaly, 27, may prove to be a short term signing while Eder may be termed as an investment for future as well as a regular player for United.

Big clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester city, Chelsea have strict policies of signing and awarding contracts to players after ageing 30. Real Madrid, have spent heavily on younger players like Vinicius Jr, Mariano Diaz, Odriozola while discontinuing the Galácticos policy. Chelsea have their own policy of awarding 1 year contracts to players over 30 years. Also, they recently signed Kepa Arrizabalaga, 23, for a world record fee of £71.6m on a 7 year contract.

Manchester United also are looking to invest in future and already have a host of young players in Rashford, Shaw, Martial, Dalot to name a few. Adding Eder to the squad may force aging players like Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia to perform consistently and at the same time will provide a cover to the veterans.

The Red Devils have the worst defensive record among the “Big Six” and adding a defender to the squad might be the correct thing. Who knows, this signing may turn the fortunes around at Old Trafford. Manchester United travel to Spain to face Valencia to play their last group stage fixture of the Champions League.
