Despite Three Done Deals, Here’s Why it Still Feels Like Arsenal Are Lacking an Actual Transfer Blueprint This Summer?

Mikel Arteta, Edu, Arsenal, this transfer window

Some people won’t be happy with what’s transpired at the Emirates during this transfer window, but then again, some people are never happy regardless of what Arsenal do. It’s human nature to want more regardless of what you’re given and Arsenal fans are no different but if you look at this transfer window compared to the last, I think it’s heading in the right direction and dare I say it, Arteta and Edu appear to be executing a decent looking plan.

The additions of Ben WhiteSambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares are as unusual as they are exciting. All three have the skills to enhance the side and make it much more competitive and dynamic, but let’s not rule out at least three more arrivals in key positions, mainly RB, CM and GK. Anything other than that and Christmas will have arrived early for the majority of us.

It’s rumoured that Lokonga is looking forward to lining up with Thomas Partey and that in itself is a massive upgrade on what we had. Anyone observing Lokonga will have seen an athletic, powerful and determined box-to-box player who comes with a series of ringing endorsements from the great and the good.

Thierry Henry and Vincent Kompany are already convinced that Lokonga will become one of the biggest stars in the Premier League due to his natural ability and willingness to succeed and you only have to see him in action to agree.

Ben White is a genuine defender in all senses with strength and power, but he also has key attributes that haven’t been evident in an Arsenal side since the days of Campbell and Adams, the ability to read the danger and assume a natural defensive position to snuff out an attack. Now, it’s just a case of finding the right partner. I’m genuinely excited by this appointment, in a position that has been problematic for over a decade.

Moving on to Nuno Tavares who is the perfect replacement for the injury-prone Kieran Tierney. In fact, Tavares could even be used in a more advanced role ahead of a back three. If Edu can resolve the RB position with another pacy individual, Arsenal could spring a few surprises. Max Aarons, please!

What they need now is an out-and-out baller to provide the service and orchestrate the midfield. Ceballos was predictable and inconsistent, Xhaka too hesitant and negative at times and Odegaard isn’t the complete physical being that, perhaps, the Premier league requires.

Willock never seized his chance, Maitland-Niles continues to assume he’s better than he actually is, which leaves Smith Rowe as the only available creative influence. The three positions I outlined earlier are still very much needed and if the campaign starts without two out of the three posts filled, Arsenal will again be up against it.

However, make no mistake, this trio is a step in the right direction and I’m being told that the club may pull off a surprise signature, however it may go down to the wire. If Edu and Arteta carry on like this, we might start believing in the process again.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
