Arsenal’s Brazilian link ? Is it “Much Edu about nothing” or Is There An Element Of Truth In The Rumours

Edu Gasper

It’s always a leap of faith, using a series of stories to make a considered assumption. Putting two and two together can be a dangerous thing, but as rumours of the arrival of Edu Gasper as Technical Director at the Emirates persist, there are now suggestions that three Brazilian players are on Unai Emery’s radar.

Coincidence ? Possibly, but Edu Gasper is now thought to have agreed terms with Arsenal and the recruitment drive was up and running from the time a verbal agreement was reached.

So, let’s assume that Edu is virtually in place from June. That way, it’s easier to link all the other speculative pieces together.

The Sun implies that the Gunners are interested in the 19-year-old Sao Paulo’s Brazilian winger, Antony.

The Express informs us that Ajax forward David Neres (22) is on Arsenal’s wish list as well (also Brazilian).

Reports also suggests Arsenal are within a whisker of signing 17 year-old Ituano player, Gabriel Martinelli. Guess what ! Another Brazilian.

That’s a lot of Brazilians in the transfer rumour mill at one time and if it turns out to be nothing more than a tenuous link, it’s quite inventive of the usually uninventive press.

Although I think that the role of TD should have gone to Sven Mislintat, there were obvious reasons for his exclusion. It’s said that the former Head of Recruitment was aloof and operated outside the management structure, almost as if he was separate to the club and as a result, he was nicknamed ‘lone wolf’.

As a result of Mislintat’s huffy departure, Arsenal turned to Edu Gasper, well after Monchi and Overmars turned it down.

Arsenal will spend in the summer, with a cash injection comprised of sponsorship money, allocated club finances and funds generated from palming off its deadwood.

Emery will have to be clever and he needs help to find the right personnel, enter Edu Gasper. Did I mention he is Brazilian!

There maybe a mixture of young emerging players at the lower end of the transfer market, free agents and possibly a loan or two but, not that flop Suarez.

For Emery to make the squad competitive, it will require quite a few bodies and this may be achieved over two transfer windows, but not necessarily the January window, which Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal’s Director of football has said “I don’t believe much in the winter window,”

Sanllehi will be under great pressure in the summer transfer window as part of the new dynamic changes at the helm of Arsenal.

The Arsenal hierarchy are under as much pressure, if not more than its new coach, Unai Emery. A failure to buy in the summer or alter Arsenal’s competitive destiny will be a risky strategy at the Emirates.
