Edu was heavily involved with bringing Gabriel Martinelli to Arsenal in the summer for the ridiculous fee of £8m and it appears that Arsenal’s technical director is attempting to secure another Brazilian gem with the acquisition of 22-year-old Bruno Guimaraes (Athletico Paranaense)
Despite an embarrassment of riches from Arsenal’s academy which includes Emile Smith Rowe, Joe Willock, Robbie Burton and Miguel Azeez, the youngsters aren’t deemed completely ready for the rigours of the premiership.
The feeling is that Bruno Guimaraes is ahead of them in terms of his personal development and technical ability but if Arsenal are serious, they will need to compete with Chelsea, Benfica and Atletico Madrid.
Edu will have a distinct advantage because of his connections with the national team and his scouting network in Brazil but that doesn’t rule out the competition. Chelsea have Brazilian players in their current squad and Frank Lampard will be hoping that the likes of Willian and Jorginho would be able to encourage Guimaraes to sign in the dotted line.
So what could Bruno Guimaraes bring to the Emirates ?
He is a well balanced playmaker who has an array of passes, short and long. He presses high and can move forward quickly past the opposition with relative ease because of his superb close control.
Guimaraes can perform even when the attention is intense, he is able to play his natural game even with limited openings. Another plus is that he can play in an advanced position or come from deep and many have already compared him to Jorginho, which could work in Arsenal’s favour in the transfer window.
Why would Chelsea want two players that are similar, even if Guimaraes is the upgrade to Jorginho. Arsenal have been looking for a box-to-box midfielder ever since Aaron Ramsey departed and out of the available options, they would do well to purchase either Bruno Guimaraes or Nabil Fakir (Real Betis)
What would the pair cost ?
Bruno Guimaraes is likely to cost £18m plus, Nabil Fekir would cost around £30m.
