Erik Ten Hag Identifies €20m Rated Dutch Left-back as his First Man United Transfer Target

Tyrell Malacia, Manchester United

Erik Ten Hag has picked out Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia as his first summer target when he takes over as manager of Manchester United after the end of this season, according to Mirror. His first objective looks to be to reportedly try to bring in the player he failed to sign from Feyenoord in the past.

Currently 22, Malacia made his first-team debut for Feyenoord in the 2017-18 season. Since then, the left-back has racked up 133 appearances, scoring 4 goals and assisting 10. This season, he has started all 31 Eredivisie games under manager Arne Slot (stats via Transfermarkt).

United currently have Luke Shaw and Alex Telles at left-back. Shaw has struggled to recreate his immense form from last season. Telles, too, has had a subpar season and has looked very unconvincing in recent weeks. The Brazilian could be on his way out at the end of this season, opening up room for a new signing. The Red Devils are looking at a busy transfer window, where they could allow 7-8 players to leave.

The Dutch full-back has been very impressive this season, in the Eredivisie and the UEFA Conference League. The 22-year-old’s display against Marseille in particular has caught the eyes of United’s scouts. United believe that they could seal the transfer of Tyrell Malacia for around £20 million.

Fellow Premier League side Arsenal are also rumoured to be interested in the Dutchman. The Gunners were in talks with the 22-year-old’s representatives last season, but a move failed to materialise. However, sources close to the player have reaffirmed his possibility of heading to Old Trafford. A source close to the player said:

“It is definitely a possibility. He is one of the league’s brightest prospects and Erik rates him.”

The report goes on to state that Luke Shaw’s future too is uncertain. The Englishman is unwilling to sign a contract extension without a guarantee of minutes under Ten Hag.

Nicknamed the “Pitbull”, Malacia is renowned for his dogged defending, supreme tackling ability, and blistering speed. The youngster averages an impressive 2.7 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game. The 22-year-old also wins 51% of his aerial duels.

The Dutchman is a decent outlet in possession too. He averages 48 passes a game with a completion rate of 85%. This season, Malacia has created 8 big chances and has 4 assists against his name.

Verdict:

Malacia is a very good player and is rated highly in the Dutch circuits. However, United have to consider two major factors while taking a transfer decision:

A) Availability of Funds: Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, and Nemanja Matic are all leaving at the end of this season. United will require due replacements for all the departees, apart from filling holes that already exist within the side.

The club has to take stock of whether they can afford to spend £20 million on a position where they already have two players for the moment. Brandon Williams is also coming off a decent loan spell at Norwich City. Could he have a second chance under Ten Hag too?

B) Availability of Other Options: Within the Premier League, Tyrick Mitchell has had a fantastic season at Crystal Palace. Both Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly interested in the 22-year-old. Jose Gaya, Javi Galan, and Nicolas Tagliafico are also available for around the same price range, if not less.
