Odegaard on Target Again, Very Poor Defending And More | How Arsenal Players Fared Against Everton

Everton v Arsenal, Everton vs Arsenal

The misery for Arsenal continues as they fail, yet again, in an away fixture, this time against the struggling Everton side. The 2-1 loss at Goodison Park is the 3rd consecutive away and 6th loss in total for the Gunners this season.

Martin Odegaard scored a wonderful goal for the visitors, while Richarlison and Gray were on target for the Toffees. Considering the performances in the previous 10 games, Arsenal’s defence looked uncharacteristically shaky at Goodison Park. The defensive midfielders couldn’t provide much cover for the back-line, causing havoc at Arsenal’s defence.

The Merseysiders could have taken the lead quite early, but for the video assistant referee who denied Richarlison twice for offside. However, the Brazilian kept pressuring the opposition defence and was finally rewarded in the 79th minute when he headed home the equaliser. Demarai Gray scored the winner in stoppage time, marking three consecutive Premier League wins against the Gunners for the first time since April 1986.

Let’s see how the Arsenal players fared against Everton on Monday

Goalkeeper:

Aaron Ramsdale (7): The match was direct competition between Ramsdale and his fellow English shot-stopper, Jordan Pickford. Ramsdale was the winner between the two based on stats, but he was helpless during both the goals conceded by the visitors.

Defence:

Takehiro Tomiyasu (6.5): Takehiro is known for his untiring work rate. His performance in this match was satisfactory, but he could have been more attacking, especially in the last stages of the second half. He made some nice crosses during the game.

Ben White (5): White’s performance was a letdown for the Gunners. Everton kept on pressuring the Arsenal defence line, but interceptions and clearances were poor, especially in the second half. Although he made some nice runs into the opposition half, he couldn’t find a proper pass to the target man in the final third.

Gabriel Magalhaes (5): The Brazilian defender was completely outdone by his fellow countryman. Richarlison found the back of the net thrice, but luckily, VAR ruled out 2 goals. Gabriel looked clueless at times and was beaten by the opposition’s pace.

Kieran Tierney (6): Fit-again Tierney finally got a chance to start for Arsenal and he played his part well against Everton. After controlling the difficult ball, he provided a nice assist to Odegaard for Arsenal’s only goal. His substitution was rather a questionable decision by the manager.

Midfield:

Gabriel Martinelli (6): Given a chance in the absence of ESR. He tried too hard to make an impact on the game with a goal but could have made some passes instead for a better-positioned player.

Thomas Partey (4.5): Partey’s form or approach towards games is a worrying sign for Arteta. It will be a big issue in the upcoming matches if Partey’s performances do not improve. Needed to be rock solid in midfield, especially with Xhaka playing alongside him, but seemed to be lacking confidence and taking needless long shots.

Xhaka (5): A surprise inclusion in the lineup, he got a direct starting role after returning from an injury. His dead-ball plays or passing were not accurate and seemed more distant from the game.

Bukayo Saka (6): He was well marked and kept quiet by the Everton defenders. He seemed hungry for the final pass, but Laca’s movements downplayed on him. Should have gotten an assist when Nketiah missed a sitter in added time.

Attack:

Martin Odegaard (7.5): Odegaard had one of the best matches for Arsenal this season, and certainly was player of the match for the Gunners. He made some intriguing passes as well as some good runs without the ball. Nice goal scored.

Alexandre Lacazette (4): He was given a chance to shine, but couldn’t trouble the Everton goal. He was not involved in creating any chances and seemed to be drifting to the left side. He certainly lacked the attacking touch, rather acted as a midfielder throughout the game.

Substitutes:

Nuno Tavares (5): Again a needless substitution, considering the actual problem being the midfield area. Tavares was not much effective, losing the ball a few times and also taking time to counterattack.

Eddie Nketiah (4): Could have made a mark on the game with a late goal from Saka’s pass, but failed. He was mostly running behind the ball and offered no attacking edge to the team.

Aubameyang (NA): Played just 8 mins and hardly saw the ball.
