The Toffees Further Diminish Champions League Hopes for Man United | How United Players Fared Against Everton

Everton vs Manchester United

The ratings of the Manchester United players against relegation-threatened Everton are utterly disgraceful, underwhelming, incomprehensible and distasteful. Say what you may, Manchester United continue exploring the depths of mediocrity as shown by their poor display in the defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Despite having headed in as favourites for the three points at Goodison Park, a nauseating lack of application and urgency in their collective performance culminated in an undesirable dent in their hopes of securing a Champions League spot next season.

While Manchester United emerged as the dominating side in the initial quarter of the game, the team’s failure to create chances and sustain pressure on the home side resulted in Everton taking the lead through a deflected goal off Harry Maguire in the first half. Following the opening goal, however, a lack of desire and insouciance soon pervaded the visitors as they failed to pressurize the opposition and find themselves an equaliser for the remainder of the game.

With United’s hopes for top-four having grown increasingly bleak owing to their lack of consistent performances, Ralf Rangnick will be looking to see out the season by avoiding further embarrassing defeats over the coming weeks. Although the team will be hoping to at least secure a Europa League spot at the end of the season, their repeated failure to deliver on the pitch could likely see the Red Devils miss out on all European competitions for the 2022/23 campaign.

Starting XI

David De Gea (GK) – 6/10: Amongst the team’s better players on the pitch, De Gea ensured he contributed with a couple of crucial saves, resulting in an overall decent performance against Everton. Likely to be considered for the club’s player of the season award, the Spaniard will be hoping for a relatively satisfying end to the season between the stick over the coming weeks.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) – 4/10: Although having delivered a decent defensive performance, Wan-Bissaka yet again failed to have an impact in attacking transitions on Saturday. With his future at the club expected to be assessed in the summer, Wan-Bissaka will be keen on improving his overall attributes before the end of the campaign.

Victor Lindelof (RCB) – 4/10: Having delivered an average performance, the Swede struggled to inspire any confidence in the team’s build-up play against Everton. With Raphael Varane likely to remain out of contention for the upcoming fixture, Lindelof will be hoping to improve on his display next weekend.

Harry Maguire (LCB) – 3/10: Although having delivered a decent performance, the captain’s lack of drive and urgency resulted in his team failing to take the game to the opposition on Saturday. Having been severely criticized for his lack of consistency and improvement throughout the season, Maguire once again failed to capitalize on an opportunity to redeem himself against Everton.

Alex Telles (LB) – 3/10: A promising addition, but Telles failed to deliver a compelling performance at Goodison Park. Expected to be given a run of games owing to Luke Shaw’s prolonged absence, the Brazilian will be keen on improving his contributions over the coming weeks.

Nemanja Matic (CDM) – 6/10: United’s best player on the pitch, Matic’s presence ensured the Red Devils remained composed in transition throughout his time on the pitch. With both Scott McTominay and Fred having suffered injuries, the Serbian is likely to feature in a majority of games over the coming weeks.

Fred (CM) – 4/10: Before being substituted following a minor discomfort in his hip flexor, Fred delivered a rather unconvincing performance on Saturday. Expected to sit out next weekend, the Brazilian will be keen on returning to the line-up before the end of the season.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM) – 3/10: A lack of intelligence and discipline saw Fernandes, yet again, fail to deliver an impactful performance against Everton. Amongst the frustrating figures in recent weeks, the Portuguese midfielder is likely to see an increase in criticism provided he fails to improve on his overall contributions over the coming weeks.

Jadon Sancho (RW) – 4/10: Having struggled to have an impact in the attacking third, Sancho remained amongst the team’s restrained performers on Saturday. Expected to remain in the starting line-up, the winger will be looking to improve his overall contributions over the coming weeks.

Marcus Rashford (LW) – 4/10: Despite having a promising start to the game, Rashford failed to improve throughout his time on the pitch. Although likely to continue struggling for form, the winger will be looking to improve on his performances over the coming fixtures.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) – 4/10: A bystander in the attacking third, Ronaldo remained a victim of the team’s failure to create goal-scoring opportunities against Everton. Given the team’s likeliness of missing out on a top-four finish, it remains to the seen if the Portuguese international remains at Old Trafford beyond the coming summer.

Substitutes:

Paul Pogba (CM) – 4/10: Despite his early introduction, a lack of urgency saw Pogba fail to improve United’s performance. Expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, the Frenchman is likely to witness a decrease in game-time over the coming weeks.

Juan Mata (CM) – 5/10: A surprise introduction, Mata struggled to impact the game on Saturday. Amongst the players likely to leave the club this summer, the Spaniard will be keen on contributing to the team’s prospects over the remaining fixtures.

Anthony Elanga (LW) – 5/10: He was expected to start the game on Saturday. Elanga failed to deliver a promising cameo against Everton. Expected to be granted game-time over the coming weeks, the youngster will be looking to contribute to the team’s prospects moving forward.
