Five Brilliant Must Know Things From the Iran vs Portugal Game as Round of 16 Clashes are confirmed and here is What you need to Know

Iran Vs Portugal, FIFA World Cup 2018, Russia,Iran,Russia

Apparently the score-line is a boring 1-1. However, fans will know how intense things got at the Mordovia Stadium as Portugal went from Group-B leaders to almost being eliminated by placing third in the space of 5 minutes thanks to almost moment for Iran.[spacer height=”30px”]

Eventually, it was valiant Iran who went out, failing to reach the Round of 16 for the first time in their history. However they bowed out with a valiant showing, laying it all out on the field for the entire world to see. Here are five things we learnt from this clash:[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”][spacer height=”30px”]5) Quaresma likes outside-of-the-foot shots

For over a decade now, Quaresma has bewildered critics and fans alike. People still don’t know how to rate him. Spells with Inter-Milan, Chelsea, Porto and now Besiktas seemed to inflate and deflate his stock periodically and some even reckoned he was a talent greater than even Ronaldo.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]While he didn’t live upto that potential, he has scored a few mesmerizing outside-of-the-foot curlers in his career and the latest one might be the most important till date.[spacer height=”30px”]

4) Iran are a group of warriors[spacer height=”30px”]

Iran fought tooth and nails and gave a timely warning to lackluster Portugal that they are fast running out of time to start producing the goods.[spacer height=”30px”]

To be honest, not many would have given Iran, (world ranking 37) a chance going against Portugal, (world ranking 4). However, only an open goal miss denied Iran a winner.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]Still they must feel proud having earned 3 points in a group where the leaders are going through with just 5. It was a close contest and the turn of events was just not favorable this time. They will most likely be back for Qatar 2022 and pray that they don’t have a group with former and current European champions to fight out with again.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]3) Ronaldo is human[spacer height=”30px”]

The great man showed most of his human self in the group’s third match. Many would have bet on him going on to score; perhaps even more than one goal, but apart from a few dazzling dribbles, he went missing for a major part of the game vs Iran[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]At the break, he became aware of Spain’s score-line and perhaps took things a bit easy-very uncharacteristic of him. Not only did he miss a penalty against Beiranvand, he was later penalized via VAR for a possible red card offence and ended up with a yellow card for a foul on Pouraliganji.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]2) VAR will change football forever[spacer height=”30px”]

Those who saw the match will know how referee Enrique Caceres stopped the momentum flow now and again to consult VAR. A hefty chunk of match time was consumed in this process and all the key decisions in the match were made via VAR- specially the card on Ronaldo and the late late penalty kick being awarded to Iran courtesy Cedric’s foul.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]Is VAR doing more harm than good? Is it being over-utilized? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: football with VAR will be a drastically different affair.[spacer height=”30px”]

1)   Round of 16 clashes confirmed[spacer height=”30px”]

Ronaldo’s penalty miss and Aspas’ late VAR-consulted winner have sealed the fate of these two neighbors .They are going through to the next stage both having scraped another draw in their groups. However, Spain must be feeling lucky for reasons more than one.[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]They face Russia next, who were outclassed by Uruguay 0-3. Yes the Russian crowd will make life difficult, but Spain must be fancying their chances for a deep run into the competition.[spacer height=”30px”]

Portugal though are less optimistic. The European champions face a battle-hardened Uruguay who have found a way past all their opponents with Suarez and Cavani leading the pack of marauders.[spacer height=”30px”]

How long will Ronaldo manage to carry the team on his shoulders? The task gets excruciatingly tough from here-on as they face a stiff round of fixtures en-route to the final (provided they get past Uruguay). This fixture seems to be very interesting indeed.[spacer height=”30px”]
