With the January Transfer Window Approaching, Here is why Arsenal Need to Forget About Zaha and Concentrate on Securing the Future of the Team

Wilfred Zaha

As we turn the corner of the year and head towards January, there are a few, mainly on social media, considering the merits of landing Crystal Palace striker Wilfred Zaha.

Arsenal placed a bid for the Palace man of around £40m in the summer, but were told it would take double of that to prize him away. It fell through with some animosity on the part of Zaha and his club, while the other suitors in the bidding war, Everton, decided to opt for Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi.

Wilfred Zaha sacked his agent, well someone had to be blamed and remained at Palace, still craving a move to the Emirates with some fans still interested, but my advice is that they need to forget about him.

Arsenal have a wealth of riches who can play wide including Aubameyang, Pepe, Martinelli, Saka and Nelson. If Arsenal were to make a move, one would have to go and that seems ridiculous to me.

Saka is showing plenty of skill, Nelson just needs to hone it. Martinelli is a genuine talent, Aubameyang has it by the bucket full and Pepe is adjusting. So, there’s no need for Wilfred Zaha surely.

If Arsenal are to spend money, then it’s still in defence with one good, emerging central defender and in the middle, where they are in need of a robust, combative and creative midfielder.

If that happens, one more season of ‘nearly not quite’ may be on the cards, but Zaha’s destination should remain elsewhere. Palace are not going to reprice or reduce the fee and £80m for someone who sparkles in a Palace side but suffers in a bigger team, would be way too much.

My other concerns are his temperament, somewhat diva-ish at times, his diving, the need for self promotion and his loyalty. In terms of loyalty, he’d just signed a contract extension with Palace before announcing that he was in need of a higher level of football to match his talent.

Ungrateful ? Just a bit !!!

By design or by fluke, Emery’s youngsters are nearly ready and Zaha’s arrival would rock the boat, with a number of young talents looking towards the exit door to secure their futures.

Yes, Arsenal would secure Zaha’s fee with three sales, but who wants to see the youngsters I’ve mentioned thriving elsewhere.

Wilfred Zaha nearly came but didn’t, let’s leave it there.
