Former Arsenal Star Backs Mikel Arteta’s Methods

Asensio

Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna believes Mikel Arteta’s management style has made a massive difference to the club’s fortunes.

The Gunners have made a sparkling start to the new season, winning six of their seven league games to move to the top of the table.

Their odds in the latest Premier League betting have been slashed over the past few weeks and they are being touted as genuine title contenders.

After winning the FA Cup during his first season in charge, hopes were high that Arteta could restore Arsenal to their former glories. It has taken the Spaniard a few transfer windows to get the squad to his liking, but the current crop of players look capable of winning silverware this term.

While winning the Premier League may be asking too much given Manchester City’s playing resources, success in one of the domestic cups or the Europa League is a distinct possibility.

The fact Arsenal are being talked about as potential Premier League winners is testament to the job Arteta has done since he replaced Unai Emery as manager. The fans got an insight into Arteta’s methods during the recent All or Nothing documentary, and Sagna is not surprised he came off extremely well.

“I haven’t seen it, but I know everybody is talking about,” he said. “Mikel is very emotional.

“If he isn’t happy, he’ll be the first one to tell you he isn’t happy. But he will create a connection with his players so they will keep fighting.

“Psychology plays a big part for him. You can see even when it’s difficult – for example, the Fulham game – the team kept pushing. The fans kept pushing.

“The players are really committed, even the substitutes, and they fully believe in the project.”

One of the biggest issues Arteta faced when he took over as manager was ridding the squad of several underperforming players.

He has achieved that while making numerous impressive signings such as Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus, Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Fabio Vieira.

The team spirit is there for all to see, with the players now playing for the badge on the front of the shirt rather than the name on the back.

Successful Arsenal teams in the past were built on the collective rather than individuals – something Arteta has been keen to implement with the current group.

His efforts appear to have paid dividends, with the players embracing what is being asked of them even when things are not going well.

Sagna believes the mentality of Arsenal’s players bears some similarities to one of the most successful teams in Premier League history.

“This is a real football team, you know?” added Sagna. “It’s not only about the XI that starts the game – you can feel a real engagement from everyone. It’s nice.

“It’s how Manchester United used to be when we played them. Everyone there was so engaged. They would even be putting pressure on the referee.

“They had the whole team there – the bench going crazy. It’s a feeling that you need to be successful. At some point you have to feel that energy.”

Arteta and his Arsenal team will get another chance to impress Sagna when they go head-to-head with Tottenham Hotspur on October 1.
