Arsenal are on the look-out for defensive reinforcements and have identified Serie A prospect Gianluca Mancini as a candidate.
Perfect start under Unai Emery did not materialise, losing their opening two Premier League fixtures against champions Manchester City and London rivals Chelsea, who also brought in a new manager in the summer.
However, since then, fortunes changed for the Gunners, and they currently boast a 16 match unbeaten run in all competitions. But still fans, as well as the management, know that this team lacks some quality players in certain departments, which could prove to be very vital if they are to win trophies at the end of the season. It was never a hidden fact that the current Arsenal team is weak defensively as compared to other big clubs in England.
The Londoners may have an unbeaten run going on right now, but in almost every match, their defense gets broken ample times, giving the opposition many opportunities to either go ahead or score an equalising goal.
This defensive problem has been more prominent in the last few weeks, as the North London side have failed to register a win in their last three Premier League outings, drawing matches against Crystal Palace (2-2), Liverpool (1-1) and Wolverhampton (1-1). What is more concerning is the fact that Emery’s side conceded first in all the three matches.
Last season, the defense gave the Gooners sleepless nights and thus, the management brought in replacements to stop leaking goals. With the arrival of keeper Bernd Leno and defenders Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Paspastathopoulos, the scenario has improved, but not to the liking of the Spanish manager.
Thus, if rumours are to be believed, Arsenal will be busy in the winter transfer window searching for a young and solid centre-back. According to Transfer Market Web, they have already finalised their new defender, and he will be coming from Italy.
According to the portal, the Gunners have set their sights on 22-year-old Atalanta centre-back Mancini. The English giants scouted the defender during his excellent performance against Inter Milan last weekend, where Atalanta trounced the Milan club 4-1, which also included a goal scored by Mancini himself. This was his third goal in three matches for Atalanta this season. He has made 11 appearances for Atalanta in all competitions.
Other than Arsenal, many other clubs have scouted the Italian defender, which includes fellow Italian clubs AS Roma and Inter Milan, while Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund are also believed to be keeping tabs the defender.
It seems like it would be a difficult job for Emery to convince the youngster make a switch to the Emirates in January, with so many clubs lined-up after him. The Italian club would like the defender to go to a different league, rather than play for a rival club in Italy.
