There were solid rumours about Bruno Guimaraes being close to joining Arsenal but that is a thing of the past now. The Brazilian midfielder has joined Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon for a transfer fee of around £17m.
I’m angry, really angry that a potentially top quality midfielder has slipped through Arsenal’s net because the club weren’t prepared to put the bucks into the pot. Guimaraes (22) is widely touted as a future great for the Brazilian national team and is also said by many to be the midfield enforcer/leader that could influence a rebuilt for Arsenal for the next decade.
Edu was believed to have spoken with Athletico Paranaense about a transfer and as a result the price increased substantially to between £22m and £25m. Arsenal wanted to loan and then discuss a permanent move in the summer but it appears that their proposal has been deemed unacceptable.
Lyon has confirmed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes on a permanent deal and it also includes a clause that will see Paranaense receive 20 percent of the profit on any future transfer.
Clearly Edu is not the only with influence and a database of Brazilian starlets to pick from, with Brazilian free-kick master Juninho evidently pulling some strings to make this happen. Nevertheless Bruno Guimaraes is just another name in the long list of examples of Arsenal’s misguided transfer shoddiness that might come back to haunt them in the future.
Lyon’s Director of football Juninho had earlier confirmed that Guimaraes is on the verge of a move to the French side.
He was quoted as saying:
“We hope to announce it quickly. He is very technically capable.”
Shame on you Arsenal !
