Grealish to United: Why it’s Likely and why it’s the Right Decision at the Right Moment

Jack Grealish, Grealish to United, Jack Grealish Aston Villa

It is no secret that Jack Grealish has caught Manchester United’s eye over the past season. The 24-year-old Aston Villa captain has put up phenomenal performances for the relegation-threatened club this season, having scored 9 goals along with 8 assists in all competitions before the season was suspended on account of COVID-19.

Speculation is high regarding him receiving an England national team call-up for the Euro 2020, which has been postponed till 2021. As reported by Manchester Evening News, United are still working on the transfer, despite the looming uncertainty surrounding the continuation of the season.

Jack Grealish has been with the Lions since he was 6-years-old. As such, it is going to take an extremely solid transfer fee for Aston Villa to part with him. According to The Mirror, Ed Woodward is ready to part with £70 million to bring the player to Old Trafford. Moreover, The Sun reports that the Red Devils are willing to offer the player a wage hike to the tune of £150,000-a-week.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has had adverse effects on the football transfer market already. Clubs have seen their squad values decrease as their revenues have plummeted due to the absence of ticket sales. All players born after 1998 are seeing a 10% decrease in value while those born before are seeing a depreciation of 20%.

According to the Manchester Evening News. Grealish’s value has dropped from £34.20 million to £27.45 million. This grants United the opportunity to sign the player at a much lower transfer fee than otherwise. Moreover, should Aston Villa get relegated to the Championship, it would be much easier for the Red Devils to sign their captain by capitalising on Aston Villa’s misfortune.

Jack Grealish himself would highly benefit from a move to Old Trafford. Firstly, it will provide him a much better shot at representing England. Despite his stellar performances for Aston Villa, he remains only a probable candidate at best to get a call-up for England in their upcoming tournaments. Playing for a club of a higher calibre than Aston Villa gives the midfielder a greater chance to showcase consistency and also stake his claim with more authority.

Secondly, it opens the door to European football for Jack Grealish. He would then have the chance to choose between Championship football and Champions League football – which seems to be a no brainer for any footballer, even for a player who grew up as a Villa supporter.

Lastly, he will have a much greater chances of winning silverware if he plays for Manchester United given how Bruno Fernandes has rejuvenated the team. Aston Villa has failed to win even a single major trophy since their League Cup win over Leeds in 1996 and his move to United would give Solskjaer the opportunity to build a team around Bruno Fernandes and Jack Grealish that can actually function at the level a Manchester United team should. All in all, Grealish accepting a move to Old Trafford is highly likely and its about how United manage to fill up the dots from here to him walking out into the Old Trafford pitch in United colours unless ofcourse Ed Woodward manages to colossally screw that up too.
