‘The Special One’ In Jeopardy: Why Its Time For The Portuguese To Leave Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho

The current position of Jose Mourinho remains highly uncertain following the plummeting performance of the club in the recent past. Especially, after their 3-2 heartbreaking defeat against Brighton and the humiliating 0-3 loss to Tottenham in just the second and third fixtures of this season brings the cloud of doubt over Mourinho’s future at Old Trafford.

Manchester United was, and still is in search of those glory days of the Sir Alex Ferguson era. ‘The chosen one’, David Moyes failed to deliver any trophy after he was appointed as the manager by Sir Alex Ferguson, even after receiving a Premier League winning team squad. A year after, came Louis van Gaal who seemed to be promising after the massive failure of David Moyes by making some remarkable transfers, but he too failed.

The only hope that United could see was in Jose Mourinho. Jose Mourinho, even though, was sacked by Chelsea after ending their season at a staggering 16th position in 2015, was considered by Manchester United in appointing him over keeping Van Gaal for another season. That season, Manchester United finished 6th under Louis Van Gaal. But, the management was still not satisfied and sacked the Dutchman as Manchester United officials were desperate to get back the Fergie era.

Jose Mourinho, who formerly managed big clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Porto, Chelsea etc. and even took some of them to the zenith, was a very bright prospect for Manchester United’s managerial post after the mayhem that was caused by Moyes and Van Gaal. After being sacked by Chelsea for having a pathetic season, Manchester United eyed the opportunity of the Portuguese being free and got him the most prestigious role at Old Trafford.

But, the question arises then and there about the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the manager of the biggest club in England.

Was the move of appointing Jose as manager, even after his team’s 16th position finish, with Chelsea being previous year Premier League winners, right?

Was it the end of Jose Mourinho after a disastrous season???

In his first season in charge as the head coach, Jose Mourinho made some significant transfers and in return, the Portuguese gave a small glimmer of hope to the fans. United made the record-breaking transfer of Pogba from Juventus and secured Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer from PSG and looked in much better shape than their previous seasons.

Although United failed to qualify for the Champions League through PL, thanks to their Europa League victory, they sealed their Champions League spot. Moreover, Jose Mourinho gave the Community Sheild as well as the League Cup in his first season.

Though these are nothing compared to the Premier League and the Champions League, looking at the previous few years record, Manchester United at least got their hands on any trophy. The performance was commendable by Jose Mourinho and his men and it gave the fans some hope of United slowly returning to its glory. In his second season in charge, the Red Devils finished 2nd in the Premier League table ahead of Liverpool and Tottenham. This was the highest position United finished at, after the Fergie era.

However, this season Manchester United looks to be wobbly from the beginning not only because of the team’s performances but also due to the relationship of the manager with his players. Anthony Martial has constantly been in the news for controversies regarding his issues with Jose Mourinho since the pre-season tour. Matteo Darmian has also been linked away from the club following his complaints regarding lack of match time.

Paul Pogba too was seen to have arguments with Jose last season and was reported to be unhappy at the club due to their poor performance. Besides, critics claim that Jose Mourinho is the reason why the midfielder is not happy at the club and is not able to perform to the full of his capabilities. Barcelona tried their best to capitalize this rift between Pogba and Mourinho and almost had Mino Raiola, Pogba’s agent convinced to get the French midfielder to Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

In my opinion, Jose Mourinho seriously needs to introspect and reconsider his tactics following his lack of game plan and failing strategies seen in the first three matches of the Premier League this season and stop putting the Red Devils down with shame.

Manchester United have now waited for too long than necessary to look at other managerial options. The Portuguese boss has vented his frustrations in the media and reports are beginning to suggest that his time at Old Trafford could be up. Chief executive of Manchester United, Ed Woodward, has seriously been in some arguments with the manager in the past week after the club failed to sign a much-needed centre-back this summer, even after having many bright defenders such as Jerome Boateng, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina on the radar.

Jose Mourinho may probably be considering his move to some other club after his recent poor form at Manchester United and his sacking, if it at all happens, shouldn’t come as a surprise to him nor to the Manchester United fans.

According to sources, there has been a lack of unity and satisfaction among the team members because of the losses they have been suffering. Manchester United players are also said to be unhappy playing under the Portuguese manager. Experts predict the signing of a new Manchester United manager before the end of this season. If this form continues for Manchester United, then Zinedine Zidane shall be the man at the helm at Old Trafford after being heavily linked with the Red Devils.
