Manchester United Drop Interest in Key Defensive Target After Breakdown in Talks; Diogo Dalot Being Considered as an Alternative”

Kieran Trippier, United

Manchester United are no longer interested in signing Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier. The English club have reportedly pulled out of the negotiations for the right-back after transfer talks broke down between the two clubs.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the only recognised right-back in the team and the Red Devils suffered when he was not present. Moreover, a healthy competition for a first-team spot always brings out the best in players, for instance, Luke Shaw. Shaw took his game to a different level after Alex Telles was brought in to play as left-back, his performances for United even earned him an England call-up, his first since 2018.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to achieve the same by bringing in a competition for AWB, the primary reason to go after Kieran Trippier in the first place. Have no doubt, Bissaka has been very good for United since he joined in 2019, but having a cover never hurts and this also helps in improvement. Ole thinks the same.

Trippier has had a successful spell at Atletico Madrid over the past two seasons. As such, the Red Devils were keen on signing him as a backup for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the right-back position. The Rojiblancos straightaway rejected Manchester United’s initial £10 million bid, countering with a valuation of €40 million (£34 million). United submitted a second bid at £21 million, but the Spanish side was unwilling to go below their price tag.

The 30-year-old full-back has established himself as a key starter for Diego Simeonè’s side. Trippier helped his team win the LaLiga title after eight years and featured in LaLiga’s Team of the Year. He is also Gareth Southgate’s prefered choice for the right-back role in the England national team.

Trippier brings in a lot of experience and skills, especially in the attacking plays. But, having played under Diego Simeone whose team is known for their sturdy defence, his defensive abilities have improved as well. Regardless of these facts, United are not willing to pay such a large sum for the player.

Meanwhile, The Athletic reports that Diogo Dalot is now being considered as an alternative by Solskjaer. Dalot has been on loan at AC Milan since last summer, and the Italian side wants to extend his contract. However, United have called him back for pre-season training next month when his contract expires, according to MEN.

Diogo Dalot could be a better alternative than signing Trippier, the Portuguese could be the answer to United’s right-back conundrum without spending a transfer fee. Wan-Bissaka is the first choice for the right-back role and only needs a backup option. Dalot can serve this purpose without any hassle.

Diogo Dalot had an impressive loan spell at AC Milan. The Portuguese defender established himself as a first-team starter at the San Siro, appearing in 32 games for the side, even scoring two goals and bagging three assists in the process. Dalot is a highly versatile player who can play on either flank, despite his preference for the right-back position. In comparison to Wan-Bissaka, he is also a great wing-back and provides far more attacking options.

With Diogo Dalot being considered as an alternative, Wan-Bissaka would be under competition for his starting role. This could prove helpful, considering the fact that Luke Shaw has improved greatly ever since Alex Telles arrived. The two are constantly competing for a starting position in the left-back role and the same could happen on the right.

Dalot is young (22) and is capable of showing improvement if given the chance. Kieran Trippier is undoubtedly a quality player and has a lot to offer, but he is already 30-year-old and does not have many years left in his prime. Paying a large fee for him to play second-fiddle to Wan-Bissaka seems ill-advised.
