Toni Kroos Sensationally Eyes £50m United Switch, Six Years On From Turning Them Down

Kroos

Toni Kroos could finally be set to make his long awaited move to Manchester United in the summer, five years on from that unfulfilled promise to David Moyes that he would move to the club.

Kroos, now 29 years old, is reportedly eager to leave Real Madrid this season after a shockingly poor campaign so far. The club sit third in La Liga, 12 points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona. They also got knocked out of the Copa Del Rey by Barca and saw their incredible triple title winning streak brought to a dramatic end by Ajax. Three managers have been in charge this season, with Zinedine Zidane recently making a sensational return just a few months after leaving his role as boss.

It has all apparently left Kroos unsettled, and eager to move. He has struggled on a personal level as well, with just three assists to his name. According to reports in the Sun, he might just make that long awaited move to United after all. The midfielder’s contract with Los Blancos still has three years left to run though. As a result, his price is likely to be rather high – somewhere in the region of £50 million.

Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Moyes was handpicked by the outgoing legendary boss to succeed him. The newly appointed boss was keen to make his mark instantly, launching ambitious moves for Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and Cesc Fabregas – all of whom were supposedly extremely close to signing for United.

While moves for Bale and Fabregas fell through, Moyes claimed that he had met with Kroos during his sole season at the club. The German was still at Bayern Munich – the club that ended United’s Champions League campaign that season – but had promised to make the switch to Old Trafford. However, after a disastrous first seven months, the Scotsman was sacked by the club.

“I had met Toni Kroos, during the season, and agreed he would come to Man United before he went to Real Madrid but somewhere in there I lost my job and it meant that Toni went elsewhere,” he said.

Now, five years on, the rumors have resurfaced. United are unlikely to be fazed by the £50 million asking price. However, at 29, Kroos no longer represents a long term option. The Reds appear to be building a squad for the future, with a number of quality youngsters at its core. Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot are all under 24 years of age. Jadon Sancho, Borussia Dortmund’s 18-year-old sensation, has also been linked with a mega bucks move to Old Trafford in the summer.

With that in mind, it is likely that the club are going to invest in a player who could be central to their push for trophies for years to come. The likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Ruben Neves have both been linked with a switch to United, and a move for one of those two appears more sensible than one for Kroos.
