Arsenal Loanee Set to Return After Successful Stint as Club Reject Transfer Offer

Lucas Torreira, Arsenal, Fiorentina, Valencia

As reported by Metro, Lucas Torreira is most likely to make a return to Arsenal after completing his loan spell with Serie A club Fiorentina. As the footballing season draws to a close across the top European leagues, it is time for clubs to decide whether they wish to keep the players they brought on loan and whether to recall the players they had sent out on loan.

The Uruguayan spent the 2021-22 season at La Viola under the tutelage of Vincenzo Italiano and quickly became a mainstay of the core midfield. Torreira had suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the 2019-20 season but was able to make it back in time due to the break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the post-injury Torreira could never make it back into the Gunners first-team and was used sparingly for the rest of the season.

The Uruguayan was then sent out on a loan stint to Atletico Madrid in the 20-21 season. The loan move was a failure as the 26-year-old managed just four starts in the entirety of the Los Colchoneros’ La Liga winning season and a mere 22 appearances all season.

The loan move caused a dip in confidence for the Uruguayan who had lost hope of playing in Europe as he could be recalled telling ESPN Argentina how he was ‘dying’ to play for Boca Juniors (via The Sun). The midfielder didn’t get that Boca move.

However, the loan stint at Fiorentina proved fruitful. Torreira made 26 starting appearances as well as 5 from the bench in the Serie A and finished the season with an output of 5 goals and 2 assists from defensive midfield (stats via transfermarkt). Clearly an impressive display, it was no surprise that Vincenzo wanted the player to stay at La Viola.

However, it looks like the defensive midfielder is set to return to the Emirates. The Arsenal kept a €15 million option-to-buy clause in the loan deal for Fiorentina if they wished to retain the services of Lucas Torreira. The Italian club had responded by asking Arsenal to lower the price down to €12.5 million but they turned down the request (Metro).

Along with a decrease in the transfer fee, the Italian club also wished to lower the Uruguayan international’s annual salary. As a result, the club and the player felt unsatisfied with the monetary nature of the deal and rejected Fiorentina’s demands.
