Romelu Lukaku has revealed that Alexis Sanchez’s goal against Arsenal had nothing to do with coincidence, but was in fact something they talked about in training.
Sanchez and Lukaku have both endured difficult campaigns for Manchester United this season. The Chilean has struggled with constant niggling injuries, while the Belgian has had a poor run of form in front of goal that has seen him get dropped for Marcus Rashford.
However, both of them were trusted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start against Arsenal in the F.A Cup. They provided fans with a brilliant reminder of what they are capable of, combining to devastating effect for the first goal of the game. Speaking to MUTV after the game, Lukaku revealed that he spoke to Sanchez in training and told him he would make sure he scored in his first game against his former club at his former stadium.
‘I told him yesterday in training, I said ‘listen, you’re gonna score tomorrow and I will give you the ball, as long as you run when I’m inside. If I can’t shoot just run, and I’ll find you,’ Lukaku told MUTV.
‘I think he could see I was looking at him and he made the right run and the finish from him was incredible, it was a good finish. We knew they would leave space, the full backs push, for us, me and Alexis were in a sort of cheating position, so our recovery would be in a three vs three, or three vs two
‘We had a lot of moments where we could have countered better, especially in the second half, I think we could have scored maybe two or three more goals, but 3-1 winning at Arsenal, the way how they play, they don’t lose a lot this season, is good.’
