United In Pole Position To Secure £60m Leicester City Midfielder

James Maddison, Maddison linked to United, Maddison

Manchester United are in ‘pole position’ to secure the signing of James Maddison from Leicester City this summer, according to reports.

Maddison has only been at Leicester for one season, having signed for the club from Norwich City for around £20 million last summer. The 22-year-old shone in his first season in the Premier League, scoring 7 goals and assisting just as many, while also creating more goal scoring chances than any other player in the league.

The Englishman possesses undoubted quality, and given his age, he would be a brilliant addition to any top side for years to come. Manchester United know this, and are keen to snap him up before any other potential suitors come in for him.

According to reports in The Independent, Maddison is valued by Leicester at around £60 million. Several reports in the media have stated that the price tag does concern United.

As brilliant as he was for the Foxes last season, that was his only season in the Premier League so far. The club are said to be ‘frustrated’ at the price tag being quoted for the midfielder, and do not feel he is worth that much. United do have money but would not want to be made to pay over the top for no reason.

United are also interested in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jadon Sancho, two other very promising young Englishmen. Once again though, the two of them have ridiculously inflated price tags. Each of the players mentioned play in positions that are problematic for United’s current squad, and hence the club made them top priority transfer targets. However, the cost of the moves means the club would probably only be able to make one signing out of the three.

Maddison plays as an attacking midfielder, and United sorely lack a creative outlet apart from Paul Pogba at the moment. He features highly on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most wanted list and is also being targeted by a couple of other top clubs in England. The one advantage United do have though, is that Maddison grew up supporting the club.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph in 2015, he explained:

“My idol is Cristiano Ronaldo; I always looked up to him because when I was younger I was more of a Man United fan – my first memory was them beating Bayern Munich and my dad running around the table with me.”

United have already secured the signature of Daniel James this summer, and will be looking to add a couple more names to their roster before the start of pre-season. Whether or not Maddison will be amongst the arrivals is a transfer saga worth keeping an eye on.
