Renan Lodi’s Header Sends Simeone’s Men Through as United are Eliminated | How United Players Fared Against Atletico

An optimistic evening ended in yet another unsatisfactory result for Man United as the Red Devils bowed out of the UEFA Champions League following a disappointing 0-1 (1-2 agg) loss to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Despite heading into the fixture on the back of an impressive victory, the hosts struggled to test the opposition, eventually failing to deliver a compelling performance throughout the ninety minutes.

A sombre start to the Man United vs Atletico game saw the hosts retain the bulk of possession, yet failed to create chances from the first whistle. Following a lapse in concentration, a quick transition saw the visitors catch the hosts out of position, with Renan Lodi registering his name on the score-sheet late into the first half.

While many expected the Red Devils to redeem themselves in the second half, much like previous games, Man United failed to break down the resolute defensive line of Atletico Madrid. Having failed to deliver a competent display throughout the ninety minutes, United will be keen on instantly driving change in their modus operandi over the coming weeks

Starting XI

David De Gea (GK) – 6/10: A couple of excellent saves saw De Gea keep the score-line within United’s reach throughout the ninety minutes. Having been amongst United’s better players on the pitch, the Spaniard will be hoping for an improvement in results over the coming weeks.

Diogo Dalot (RB) – 6/10: Tasked with a challenging role, Dalot delivered a diligent performance on Tuesday. Although having struggled to contribute in attack, the Portuguese full-back remained amongst United’s better players on the pitch.

Raphael Varane (RCB) – 6/10: A commanding presence, Varane remained a reliable figure throughout the ninety minutes. Composed in possession, the Frenchman will be hoping for an improvement in results over the coming weeks.

Harry Maguire (LCB) – 4/10: At fault for the goal conceded, Maguire remained a questionable figure throughout the game. Having struggled for form this season, Maguire will be keen on improving his performances over the remainder of the campaign.

Alex Telles (LB) – 5/10: Having failed to carry over the momentum from his impressive display against Spurs, Telles struggled to carry out his duties efficiently. With the club in need of top-four, the Brazilian will be keen on redeeming himself over the coming weeks.

Scott McTominay (CDM) – 5/10: Despite a noticeable first-half, McTominay faded into anonymity for the remainder of his time on the pitch. Having failed to deliver an impactful performance, the Scotsman will be keen on delivering consistent performance over the coming weeks.

Fred (CM) – 6/10: A compelling first-half performance saw Fred impact the attacking transitions for Man United, however, much like his teammates, the Brazilian eventually failed to deliver a contribution against Atletico. With the team lacking in his position, Fred will be keen on displaying consistent performances over the coming weeks.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM) – 4/10: A frustrating figure throughout the game, Fernandes failed to have a positive impact against the La Liga side on Tuesday. Having struggled to deliver consistent displays this season, the Portuguese will be keen on improving his performance over the remainder of the campaign.

Anthony Elanga (RW) – 5/10: Having nearly broken the deadlock in the first half, Elanga struggled to impact the game from the wing throughout his time on the pitch against Atletico. With Marcus Rashford undeserving of a first-team spot, the youngster will be keen on improving his overall displays over the coming weeks.

Jadon Sancho (LW) – 4/10: A poor display saw Sancho fail to deliver an impactful display on Tuesday. Despite being the team’s most reliant performer in recent weeks, the youngster struggled to execute his role diligently against Atletico.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) – 5/10: A lack of service saw the Man United striker struggle to deliver an impactful display against Atletico. Although having tried his best, the Portuguese will be keen on pushing the team into a top-four place at the end of the season.

Substitutes:

Nemanja Matic (CDM) – 6/10: A disciplined cameo saw Matic deliver an impactful performance on Tuesday. Undeniably, the team’s most reliable midfielder, the Serbian will be keen on cementing his place in the starting line-up over the coming weeks.

Marcus Rashford (RW) – 5/10: Another apathetic cameo saw the Man United academy graduate fail to deliver a compelling performance against Atletico. Unlikely to find his place in the starting lineup anytime soon, Rashford will be keen on improving his performances over the coming weeks.

Paul Pogba (CAM) – 5/10: Much like the other substitutes, Pogba failed to deliver a compelling cameo. A surprise exclusion from the starting line-up on the evening, the Frenchman will be keen on returning to his best form over the remainder of the season.
