Manchester United Agree to Pay €50 Million for Key Defensive Target

Raphael Varane, United, Madrid

Transfer talks between Manchester United and Real Madrid over Raphael Varane have been ongoing for several weeks now. Ole is on the hunt to sign an ideal partner for Maguire at the back in this summer transfer window and Varane is the key target on his list, and by the look of it, things are looking progressive.

Varane has been linked with a transfer to Manchester United on several occasions, dating back to 2011. The 28-year-old centre-back is a key figure for Real Madrid and France. With 356 appearances and 18 titles across 10 seasons for Real Madrid, he has an array of experience to offer.

Varane’s contract at the Bernabeu expires in a year, and he has refused to sign a new contract. Varane’s representatives have stated that he is looking for new challenges, according to a report by The Athletic. As such, things look optimistic for Manchester United this summer.

The English club are apparently willing to pay €50 million (£42.8 million) for the Real Madrid defender, according to a report from La Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness). The report, however, suggests that the Red Devils face competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain. PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino is interested in signing the player but is yet to make an offer despite the interest.

Besides this, The Athletic reported that Real Madrid want to sign PSG forward Kylian Mbappe and this might help Manchester United get the deal done for Varane. Madrid president Florentino Perez is keen on bringing Mbappe to the Santiago Bernabeu and knows that he needs to sell players to achieve this dream. At present, there are 7-8 players on the transfer list, including Varane, as stated by La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Moreover, a report by the Independent stated that the Frenchman wants to join Manchester United. The French international believes that it is time for him to make a change to gain new experiences in his career. Manchester United is a favoured destination as the player wants to play in the Premier League despite interest from PSG. The two clubs are yet to agree on the transfer offer. However, reports indicate that Manchester United may be able to play in all the factors to close the deal with Madrid for Varane.

Solskjaer’s men are aiming for the Premier League in the coming season, after 7 years of failing to win the domestic title. Raphael Varane’s arrival at Old Trafford would certainly help bring the Red Devils close to achieving that dream. The defensive line-up at United has been a major concern for several seasons now.

Raphael Varane is arguably one of the best defenders in the world at present. He has a wealth of experience under his belt and has the skillset to form a strong and steady defensive partnership with Maguire and provide the consistency that Manchester United needs at the back. Last season, he won 64% of his tackles and had a pass accuracy of 90% in the LaLiga. Varane is also good with the ball and can set plays from the back, something Maguire clearly lacks.

Varane is currently engaged with his national side at the Euro 2020. Only time will tell how things will turn out in the transfer market. However, with things looking good for all parties, we could hopefully see the Frenchman donning the red jersey at Old Trafford next season.
