Man United Turn Down £50 Million Move For Anthony Martial; Was That The Prudent Thing to Do ?

Anthony Martial, United, Juventus

The Red Devils have turned down a £50 million move for their French striker Anthony Martial.

Inter Milan, who are undergoing a huge transfer haul this summer transfer with a number of players leaving the team, are out looking for replacements for their outgoing Serie A winning stars. With star striker Romelu Lukaku being one of the players leaving the club, the Nerazzurri see the Man Utd forward as a potential replacement.

Anthony Martial has had a rather unstable run of form over the past couple of seasons at Manchester United. The Frenchman arrived at Old Trafford for £58m in the 2015-16 season, with the reputation of being one of the brightest prospect in club football. Yet, he has found it difficult to find a stable run of form for the Manchester giants, and due to which, has failed to secure a fixed spot in the starting 11 at Old Trafford. His best season at the club was during the 2019-20 season where he scored 23 goals in 48 games.

So, it is rather surprising that Inter think he would be a suitable replacement for Lukaku, especially considering that he managed to score only 7 goals in 36 games last season. His total tally (via transfermarkt) is 76 goals in 258 matches, which is impressive but not close to being enough for a top striker at Man Utd.

Despite all this negativity surrounding the player, the French forward is still said to retain the confidence of his manager who values him enough to reject any advance for the player as of now.

According to the Dailymail, Inter Milan have reportedly expressed an interested in signing Martial and have expressed a willingness to place a £50 million bid for him, Manchester United however have sternly rejected any approached for the Frenchman.

The report states that Inter want to sign Martial as a replacement for their star striker, Romelu Lukaku who signed for Chelsea recently. But, Ole is intent on keeping the player and rejected the transfer move, and now it is up to Martial to prove himself worthy of this massive vote of confidence shown on him.

Martial is certainly not a bad player but he is also not one of the best strikers out there and no where close to what United supporters expected him to be by this point. The player has some versatility going forward as he can play on both flanks or as a centre forward. His pace and excellent ability on the ball, plus his sturdy physique allows him to play in all those areas up front. However, throughout his time at United, he has failed to establish himself as the undisputed striker and main man for United’s attacks despite United craving for someone to step ever since Lukaku’s departure to Inter.

However, despite the disappointment, Martial has an unexpected and glorious chance to prove himself this season. With Rashford injured and not due back till October, and Cavani unavailable initially, Martial has a one of a kind opportunity to step up and finally prove himself to be a man capable of leading United’s attacking prowess this season.

However, if this doesn’t happen, Martial could very well see himself drop down to become the third choice, behind Cavani and Greenwood for the centre-forward role. Moreover with United having incredible depth for the winger positions as well, Martial could actually see himself benched for most of United’s games season if he’s unable to repay the managers faith when the club needs him the most.

That is why, instead of taking chances and betting on his form, in my opinion, the smart thing for United would be to accept the £50m offer for the player, which is a good price considering his performances, and instead use that money to buy a central defensive midfielder, which is one of Manchester United’s key concerns right now.

Nonetheless, Ole has already rejected the bid, and only time will tell whether his choice to put his faith on the player will pay off.
