Manchester United Working on a Deal to Sign €35m Rated Brazilian Winger, Talks Progressing

Antony, Man United, Manchester United, Ajax

Man United manager Erik ten Hag is pushing the club to make a bid for Brazillian winger, Antony, who was a major part of his Ajax side last season. The Red Devils have welcomed their new manager with open arms and under his tutelage, are preparing a summer rebuild to compete with the top teams in England next season.

A significant requirement for the Red Devils in this transfer window is to look for players that can take up positions in the forward line but aren’t necessarily out-and-out number 9s. A player that fits that bill happens to be Ajax’s Antony. The Brazilian joined the Dutch side in 2020 after impressing at his hometown club, Sao Paulo.

The winger has majorly impressed the viewers with his performances in the Dutch league. Antony has scored 17 goals and got 12 assists in the Eredivisie over the two seasons he has spent at the home of the Dutch champions (stats via Transfermarkt). Primarily a right-winger, he is adept and skillful enough to play on both the wings and has often featured on the left.

The 22-year-old’s game-play is marked by his quick feet, rapid pace, and deft touch, which helps him to beat defenders and progress the ball to the final-third. He is highly capable of holding the ball at this feet in the dangerous areas of the pitch. At Ajax, the Brazilian uses his dominant left foot to assist his striking options in Lassina Traore and Sebastien Haller.

According to GOAL, the representatives of Antony are already in Europe to engage in talks and finalise a deal with Man United. The report states that United are willing to pay in the ballpark of €60 million, a perceived cut-price fee owing to United’s improved relations with Ajax, having conducted a fair bit of business with the Dutch club.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth recently stated Man United making initial contact with the Eredivisie champions over a potential move for Antony. It has been previously reported that the Red Devils are undeniably in the market for Dutch duo, Jurrien Timber and Antony. The switch would mean that Sao Paulo would get around £13 million due to the sell-on clause they included in player’s deal with Ajax.

Man United bought Jadon Sancho last season in a bid to improve their attacking output from the right-wing. However, Sancho has heavily featured on the left in the entirety of last season, a position also favoured by his English compatriot, Marcus Rashford.

This conundrum has created a need for a pure left-footed right-winger who can slot in on the right and whip in some quality crosses for United’s striker, Cristiano Ronaldo. The crossing has been an attribute that the team has lacked in recent times.

The right-wing position was filled up by United’s academy graduate Anthony Elanga who put in a decent shift but still lacks that quality and the end product. Keeping everything in mind, bringing a player like Antony into the team makes a lot of sense, especially considering his previous work experience with the current Man United boss.
