Things just keep getting worse for Manchester United as the season goes on. After a rocky start to the season with United only winning once in their last 7 games. Fans really don’t know what to expect. United have major problem with almost 10 players’ contract expiring at the end of the current season, it may seem a complete rehauling of the squad, but some of the players whose contracts run out at the end of the season are David De Gea and Anthony Martial, with Luke Shaw recently signing a long-term contract, fans would’ve suddenly felt a relief of not losing a player for the future.
But the same can’t be said about the likes of Martial and Andreas Perera, who are reluctant to commit their future at Old Trafford.
“I am not confident, I cannot find the word in English, but let’s see what happens.”
“Only the club, David and his people can answer that. My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for Manchester United and, if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David.”
Such comments would surely make the Old Trafford faithful nervous as the Spaniard has been the Red Devils’ best player for almost half a decade. Year after year the shotstopper’s numbers have only improved, and by winning the Golden Glove, he has further laid his mark on the English game. In many fans’ opinion, the Spanish international was a major reason Louis Van Gaal lasted for two seasons, as his heroics kept the Dutchman’s job, and same can be said about Mourinho as well.
United hierarchy were delighted by news of Thibaut Courtois’ sigining by Real Madrid, meaning the United No. 1 would be forced to sign a long-term deal at Carrington, seeing his long awaited return go up in flames.
But things haven’t gone to plan, De Gea’s constant refusal to sign a new deal could mean he could leave in the summer. Clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, who recently signed Gianluigi Buffon, could be looking at the Spanish international’s situation, as their attempts to find a long-term solution to their own goalkeeper problems with Salvatore Sirigu, Kevin Trapp, Alfonse Areola all failing to establish themselves as the undisputed No. 1 at PSG.
The English giants need to make De Gea their best paid player in order for him to stay, and looks like that won’t be enough either, as his next 4 years will probably be his last at the peak of his powers. David would not only want to be paid what he thoroughly deserves but also would want to have a shot at the UEFA Champions League, a competition in which Mourinho’s side have been dreadful in recent times.
It is naturally expected that De Gea would be asking for a significant investment from the Old Trafford outfit into the first-team next season in order for him to stay and for United to challenge all major trophies. If not he has forged a reputation so big, all the super clubs would be outside Old Trafford in a flash with their massive cheque books to get his signature.
