As a paying Manchester United fan who enjoys the fierce competition of the premier league, its natural to want to see the opposition at full strength, having been proactive in the summer transfer window and at least that way, there can be no excuses for defeat.

It’s been a distinctly underwhelming transfer window and to be fair, I expected Manchester United to come out all guns blazing to replenish a dull, unimaginative side under Ole Gunner Solskjær but it hasn’t happened.

At the end of last season the Manchester club announced they would support their new manager to reinvigorate the club but apart the arrival of Wan Bissaka from Palace and Daniel James from Swansea, United have hardly set the transfer window slight.

Heavy at the back, light in the middle and mismatched at the top, the best Manchester United can expect for the season ahead is more of the same unless they invest.

I’d start by shipping out Pogba, who will be released from Manchester United as soon as the right figure is available. Mata is clearly past his best but has performed better than most which says a lot about the rest of the team.  Lingard is probably the most overrated United player in their history, one that has somehow managed to turn average performances into England caps.

Where is the grit and inventiveness ? It’s not at the feet of Fred, Mctominay or Pereira. Nemanja Matic, now 30 will need upgrading within another two seasons at Manchester United.

In attack, it’s ridiculous to not play Martial and Rashford until he picks up a third striker that complements both. Sanchez and Lukaku need to be dispatched as quickly as possible to avoid being stuck with them both for another season. One plodding about like a fridge freezer in football boots and the other calculating his earnings instead of stacking up the goals.

Of the targets they are allegedly interested in, Moussa Dembele (Lyon) and Bruno Fernandes (Sporting Lisbon) both would be fantastic, dynamic additions to United’s squad, with Fernández adding quality and leading the charge in the centre and Dembele bringing a much needed cutting edge in front of goal.

There’s also talk of Juventus striker Paulo Dybala being on Ole’s shopping list but that would be a last resort option for me. For the midfield, Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid) would be a useful addition with his physical prowess and power.

I’m less inclined to agree a move for Declan Rice (West Ham) or Sean Longstaff (Newcastle) who are nowhere near the quality that Manchester United need. Both would be reasonable squad players at a domestic level but in Europe ? wakey, wakey !!!

It would appear that Manchester United have grown tired of the star players and are now looking at those capable of putting in a shift but they are far from being a Roy Keane or Paul Scholes, lets be brutally honest.

United’s pre season has proved a success and includes a win over Spurs but none of this preamble counts for much and United’s disjointed team isn’t going to suddenly challenge for the premiership. This could be Ed Woodward’s last season in charge at Manchester United, if there’s any blame for United’s demise, it’s all his.

He let Mourinho spend freely with no accountability and allowed the decline to continue. He now needs to go out and get his new manager quality players to lift the club or like Arsenal, Manchester United could be in the wilderness for years to come.
