Manchester United Suffer Cardiac Arrest After a Series of Catastrophic Mistakes.

Even the impartial observer must realise that the current plight of Manchester United is a bad thing for the Premier League and the sport in general. The Red Devils are a global brand steeped in history and synonymous with the biggest football occasions which are imbedded in the fabric of the sport via Busby and Ferguson.

However, their current predicament was avoidable and in many ways, this is what happens when a club trades on past reputations instead of building new legacies. Over a billion pounds spent since the Scottish trophy machine left and 6 managers on it shows just how rudderless the United yacht has become, in fact it’s now more of a barnacle encrusted tugboat after a disastrous season which was punctuated by poor form collectively and individually.

More worryingly are the rumours of disharmony and fractures within the dressing room. Those rumours aren’t far from the truth according to various sources and it’s said that Solskjaer was permanently fire fighting and ended his reign by simply papering over the cracks. By the time Ralf Rangnick arrived, they’d become chasms.

What United ended up with under subsequent managers was a team that on paper looked like they could compete and win a host of the trophies, but in reality, they ended up with a collection of overpriced individuals who had absolutely no right to wear the famous red shirt.

At the centre of this implosion is Ed Woodward (Executive vice Chairman) who presided over what will be viewed as one of the worst periods in the club’s history. A stagnant spell underlined by poor recruitment with millions wasted on incredibly average players.

This Manchester United side is the worst in living memory and simply isn’t a patch on any of the Ferguson sides that ruled the division and scooped 13 Premier League titles. It’s a pointless affair trying to compare a Ferguson team to any of it’s latter incarnations, but if you are a United fan, you will miss shopping in Harrod’s and baulk at the thought of Sainsbury’s special offers.

The present United team are a truly dysfunctional outfit that lack genuine spirit and quality. Only Ronaldo has the genuine right to wear the shirt and he’s proven that even at the age of 37, he can still score goals in any team in any league, despite those around him not being at the same level.

Erik ten Hag’s priority will be to determine who has the stomach for change and who fits his ‘give everything’ mentality. There will be exits, quite a few one suspects and United fans will have to be patient over the next two or three years as the Dutchman looks to find the reasons, the deep routed decay and consistent mediocrity.

I could go through the current Manchester United side and name at least 9 players that Ten Hag should sell or certainly allow their contracts to run down without too much fuss. However it’s not about personnel at this stage, it’s about identity and finding the club’s soul again.

As we all know Ten Hag likes to develop talent and the United academy players could well provide a similar vibe and spirit as the class of ‘92. Instead of the underachieving, highly paid individuals that the United boss is currently lumbered with, he could forge a young team that could dominate the Premier League for a decade.

Is that realistic? Yes, very much so, but the Dutchman must strip back the entire fabric of the club to ensure the culture and mentality are correct. Money will be available but Ten Hag has Van De Beek on the books, Ronaldo and Fernandes and that’s a good place to start.

For those calling for the Portuguese forward’s exit, I’d organise a mental capacity meeting to assess their state of mind. Unless he is guilty of causing division or unrest, Cristiano Ronaldo is going to provide the threat and goals that Erik Ten Hag’s United need.

As an impartial observer, I’m intrigued by this appointment and if United can rediscover their past successes. How long will it take? That’s the big question and will the owners allow him the time. For United’s sake, let’s hope so.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
