Manchester United Keeping Their Tabs Open On Former Celtic Right-Back

Manchester United have reportedly developed an interest in signing Josip Juranovic.

The 27-year-old Croatian helped his nation reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022. He also plays a crucial role in the current Celtic team.

United had opened the doors for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to leave but a move was not finalized.

United boss Erik ten Hag prefers technical players and might prefer Josip Juranovic over Wan-Bissaka. The 25-year-old English right-back has failed to be a regular starter in Ten Hag’s system. However, ever since Diogo Dalot has been injured, Bissaka has not let the Portuguese’s absence be felt. Nevertheless, it is understood that Ten Hag might prefer to have two technical and attacking right-backs.

According to Tutto Mercato Web, Manchester United will keep chasing Josip Juranovic as the player is stalling other clubs, waiting for United’s bid. Chelsea were amongst the other top clubs who were interested in signing the Croatian. However, the player now favours a move to United as the Blues have pulled out of the race.

The Red Devils are still uncertain about Wan-Bissaka’s future at the club. If the Englishman decides to leave the club this month, then United will most likely make the move for Juranovic. United could get some decent resale amount from Wan-Bissaka as the player still has one more year left on his contract.

Diogo Dalot has resurrected his career under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. It is possible that Juranovic will also see an upwards trajectory in his career after joining United. The Croatian has increased his value in the World Cup itself with his energetic displays.

Should Manchester United Invest In Josip Juranovic?

Although we have seen impressive displays from Wan-Bissaka lately, it is important for the club to deliver Erik ten Hag what he wants. The Dutch manager has turned the club around since his arrival. The ownership must have realized by now how important it is to back the manager, and Ten Hag needs a more reliable option than Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Josip Juranovic has made 1.7 tackles and 0.7 interceptions while also completing 1.8 clearances per game. Despite being a right-back, he makes 1.1 key passes and also completes 1.8 long balls (stats via whoscored). He is also an excellent crosser of the ball. In fact, passing is one of the key attributes of his game.

Moreover, he also has experience in his game which Diogo Dalot currently lacks.

Manchester United have also been interested in signing Denzel Dumfries but it would be a big money move. Josip Juranovic is a much cheaper option with more reliability at the back than what Dumfries provides. Dumfries’ attacking prowess can sometimes be cancelled out by his defensive frailties.

Manchester United now must try and sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka to other clubs. They should recover at least half of what Juranovic is going to cost them. Player sales will have to play a big part in United’s rebuild process.

However, when looking at it, a move for a right-back looks like it can wait till the summer transfer window.
