According to reports from the Daily Mirror, Manchester United are set to offer Luke Shaw a contract extension.

Luke Shaw arrived at Old Trafford from the Saints in a deal worth around £33m during the summer of 2014. Luke was in great form in the previous season which made the Red Devils bring him to Old Trafford for a record fee for a teenager at that time.

The English Left back became the then most expensive teenager in world football. He was brought in to fill in boots of United’s long serving left back Patrice Evra. A lot was riding on his shoulders to serve as Evra’s replacement.

During the managerial period of Louis Van Gaal, Shaw started off on a strong note building a modest debut season for United. He showed great signs of potential even giving a hunch of becoming one of United’s greats.

Unfortunately, he has not been able to fulfill his worth succumbing to a series to injuries. In September 2015, he suffered a double leg fracture during the match against PSV Eindhoven in Champions League which put him out of action for a duration of atleast six months. Since then, he has not been able to retrieve his form and has been down the pecking order.

But according to reports in England, Manchester United is set to offer a contract extension of 12 months to protect the investment. Shaw has 10 months remaining on his current contract and United would not want to let go a prospect like him.

Although his comeback under Jose Mourinho has not been too good, his performances for the under-23s in the last two matches has been pretty well. He is currently recovering from an ankle injury he endured in the previous season and would look forward to solidify his place in the first team.

United’s current coach has openly criticised his work ethic and fitness as per The Sun, the Portugese boss still wants to give the 22 year England defender another chance to prove his worth and fight for his spot in the team.

Luke Shaw would surely want to overcome his manager’s criticism and justify his price-tag as sets himself to show what he can actually do. It is for sure that he has no shortage of talent.

The contract extension should provide him confidence to show his mettle. The left-back has time on his side and still can become one of the best as he prepares to make a strong comback.
