Manchester United are reportedly planning to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer next summer. The 26-year-old German has only 12 months remaining on his contract and is yet to sign a contract extension due to Bayern failing to meet his expected wage demands. This developing situation has already alerted several top European clubs, including Manchester United, who have already made contact with the player’s agents according to reports.
The English giants have a similar situation to Bayern, with one of their star players, Paul Pogba, refusing to sign an extension despite having only 12 months remaining on his contract. As such, the club are looking for replacements due to Pogba’s uncertain future and Goretzka’s contract situation has grabbed their attention.
United have had their eyes on Goretzka ever since he shot to fame with his performances back at Schalke. Now it seems, the Red Devils are set to make a serious move for the 26-year-old with a contract offer which is way more than what Bayern are presently willing to offer Goretzka.
The German international has scored 25 goals and registered 27 assists in 112 appearances across all competitions. Having won three Bundesliga titles, one Champions League crown, and two DFB-Pokals during his three seasons with the Bavarians. On the international stage, Goretzka has played 35 times for Germany and scored 14 goals during those games. He was also a part of the German squad that featured in the recently concluded Euro 2020 championship.
Bayern have strict wage policies and are currently at a stalemate with Goretzka and Kimmich over their new deals, according to reports from SportBild (via the Mirror). Goretzka and his representatives are expecting a contract worth around €20m (£17m), whereas Bayern are only offering between €10m (£8m) and €12m (£10m). The report also claims that Manchester United are keeping a close eye and have placed a better offer than Bayern amid the standoff between the two parties.

Another report by the Dailymail, citing SportBild, has stated that United have made contact with Goretzka, with the player apparently ‘irritated’ by Bayern’s failure to resume talks about his contract extension after initial discussions had already taken place earlier this year. Man Utd, on the other hand are interested in taking advantage of this tense situation and have been understood to have tabled a ‘concrete £200,000-a-week offer’ for the player to join them next summer.

Despite reports emerging about the offer that made Man Utd have made, its also possible that it could all simply be a ruse to raise the player’s value by his agents. Nevertheless, if this does go through, Manchester United would be securing a world-class player in Goretzka, who is just about entering his prime, and that too on a free. Thats somewhere around £70m in transfer fees saved which could be invested elsewhere.

The german midfielder has been an absolute beast at Bayern ever since he arrived from Schalke in 2018. Dominating in the central midfield area over the years, alongside his partner Joshua Kimmich, together, they are the driving force behind Bayern’s attacks through the middle. Goretzka is undoubtedly one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world, and he has proven his worth on countless times with his performances over the past few seasons.
Though the player is fundamentally different from Pogba as a central midfielder, he would bring many quality traits to the team that can prove to be invaluable in the Premier League. Goretzka’s main assets are his physicality and speed; he brings a lot of attacking force and pace to the game. Besides these, he possesses a great ability to win aerial battles and retain balls in his half combined with an astounding vision to start-off counter attacks. As such, he is a highly versatile player capable of playing defensive as well as offensive roles and would make for an incredible addition to this United team.
