Manchester United have made an enquiry for former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane who plays for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. The German international has often struggled for consistency during his spell in Allianz Arena under both Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick.
With Sadio Mane’s arrival and Serge Gnabry’s good form, it looks unlikely that Sane will be able to earn a place in the starting lineup regularly at Bayern.
As for United, Marcus Rashford has looked out of touch and Jadon Sancho hasn’t lived up to his price tag. So, Sane would be an ideal option with the German wanting game time to be in contention for the national team squad selection for the Qatar World Cup this winter. However, any deal for Sane would be controversial, given how he has previously won two Premier League titles with Manchester City.
Player Profile
The 26-year-old made 32 Bundesliga appearances last season but only 22 of them were starts (stats via transfermarkt). He scored 14 goals and assisted 15 in 45 appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga giants (stats via transfermarkt). Since leaving the Premier League, he has worked on his weak areas in Bayern and has greatly improved his defensive output.
His ability to beat opponents with his pace is his greatest strength. When attacking, Sane favours making diagonal runs in behind his opposing full-back and then shooting across goal or cut-back for the forwards similar to his style in City.
Throughout his Bayern career, Sane has been used from the right. During build-up play on the left, he sought to drift infield to support Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller. If he was confronted by a defensive block and saw a lack of space, he tried to drag the full-backs away from their defensive structure by pulling wider and then drove across that full-back into the inside channel before crossing towards the far post.

Verdict
Ten Hag currently has Anthony Martial playing up front with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho on the wings, but the United boss will be keen on bolstering his attack with Cristiano Ronaldo’s future uncertain as well.
Ten Hag’s first priority was to sign Antony from his former club. Ajax have seemingly priced the Manchester club out of a deal after setting an asking price of £79.5m (€95m).
Sane would be an excellent alternative with the German international already used to playing in the Premier League during his time with Manchester City before he moved to Bayern Munich in 2020. United are also looking at other targets like Benjamin Sesko and Pedro Neto, both having emerged as potential alternatives to Antony.
