Manchester United Show Concrete Interest, Set to Submit First Offer for €70m Rated Lazio Midfielder

Sergej Milinkovic Savic, Manchester United

Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is one of the leading names being linked with a summer move to Manchester United. According to the latest reports, the Red Devils are considered to be in a pole position to land the Serie A midfielder in this summer transfer window.

The midfield woes at Old Trafford are fouled up beyond all repair. With new manager Erik ten Hag coming in at the end of this season, there is going to be a squad overhaul. Major changes are expected to take place in multiple positions including the midfield.

Moreover, Nemanja Matic is leaving at the end of the season. Paul Pogba could follow suit, given his contract is expiring too. United will need to sign at least one midfielder to replace the outgoing players. The Red Devils are keen on adding reinforcements in a bid to strengthen the squad before kick-starting the new campaign.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic could serve as the ideal signing for Manchester United. The Red Devils are long-term admirers of the Serbian midfielder and even tried to sign him in 2019, but a move failed to materialise as Lazio rebuffed their approach.

Now, according to the Calciomercato (via Football Talk), Manchester United have shown a concrete interest in Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. They are planning to go forward with a first bid close to the price tag (€80m), set by the club’s president Claudio Lolito.

On the other hand, Sport Witness reported that Mateja Kezman, Sergej’s agent, arrived in Italy last week with two offers for the player from interested parties. Both Manchester United and PSG, who are also said to be keen admirers, have tabled an offer of €65m for the midfielder and Kezman reportedly presented them to Lazio.

These opening bids will certainly not convince the Italian club to part with their star midfielder. However, it would bring Lazio to the conversation table, enabling the concerned parties to go forward with negotiations to secure the player’s signature in the summer.

Apart from United and PSG, the 27-year-old has suitors from Juventus as well, who have shown interest in the Lazio star. But as things stand, the midfielder is said to be beyond the financial reach of The Old Lady. This probably makes way for United to close a deal with the former Genk man, but are expected to face competition from the French giants.

Lazio currently value their star at around €80 million. Previously, president Lolito set the Serbian’s price tag at €120m, but with only two years left in his contract and his wish to leave Stadio Olimpico this summer, he lowered the asking price. Moreover, the player’s representatives also believe a figure of around €70 million to be more realistic.

Milinkovic Savic has netted 57 goals and registered 51 assists in 291 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt) for Lazio across all competitions. He is considered to be one of the best midfielders in Serie A ever since his arrival in 2015.

The 27-year-old is equally effective going forward as well as in his defensive duties. He has contributed 10 goals and 11 assists in 34 league appearances this season. Meanwhile, he has affected nearly two tackles and one interception per game while also winning three aerial duals on average.

Sergej Milinkovic Savic can slot straight into the Manchester United starting XI next season. Having spent seven years at Lazio, he would be open to a career change. Moreover, he could be the ideal signing to cover up for the departures of Matic and Pogba. We will have to wait and watch if this summer brings in good news for the Red Devils.
