Manchester United Target Bundesliga Stalwart As New Backup Shotstopper

With David De Gea faltering, Manchester United are short on options between the posts. 36-year-old Tom Heaton is the only deputy for the Spaniard at the club. As a result, the Red Devils have decided to explore the transfer market, identifying Yan Sommer.

Sommer joined Monchengladbach in 2014 as a replacement for Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. He came in from the Swiss side FC Basel 1893, after winning 4 consecutive league titles between 2011 and 2014.

Yann Sommer has notched up 327 appearances for Monchengladbach across 8 seasons, managing 87 clean sheets (stats via transfermarkt). He has also been a mainstay with the Switzerland National Team. Since his debut in 2014, Sommer has 29 clean sheets from 71 appearances for the National Team, including games in the 2018 World Cup, and 2016 and 2020 editions of the Euros.

Could Manchester United Sign Yann Sommer?

Sommer, currently 33, has a contract with Borussia Monchengladbach until 2023. The German outfit have offered him a 3-year extension, talks for which have currently been stalled. The Swiss shot-stopper already rejected a chance to join OGC Nice earlier in the transfer window but could be tempted by a better offer.

According to Andreas Boeni, Manchester United have Yann Sommer on their shortlist for goalkeeper targets. Ivan Meslier of Leeds United, Southampton’s Alex McCarthy, and Newcastle United duo Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow are potential targets from within the Premier League itself.

Sommer reportedly is “flattered” by the links to Old Trafford, but concerned that he may not avail regular minutes. With the 2022 World Cup scheduled for the middle of this season, the 33-year-old is looking to maintain form and rhythm during this campaign.

The possibility of staying at Borussia Monchengladbach is also a possibility for the goalie. Sommer also has other suitors outside of Germany, including Premier League outfit Leicester City.

Verdict

Yann Sommer could be a solid backup option for David De Gea if he does arrive. The Swiss international is comfortable with the ball at his feet, and would fit into Erik ten Hag’s philosophy well. He is a decent shot-stopper and reliable penalty keeper option too.

Manchester United also need to clarify whether they are hunting for a De Gea replacement in the near future. Yann Sommer represents a short-term investment and would need to be replaced within a couple of years. If United are willing to begin phasing out De Gea, the club should consider a younger option from the transfer market.

Do you think Manchester United should sign Yann Sommer? Should David De Gea still be the club’s #1 choice? Let us know in the comments.
