Man United Considering Swoop for €35m Rated Premier League Forward as Ronaldo Replacement

Ivan Toney, Manchester United

According to latest reports, Manchester United are keeping tabs on Brentford striker Ivan Toney and could make a move this summer. The Red Devils are seeking a centre-forward in case they lose Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently expressed his desire to leave Old Trafford.

After missing out on Champions League qualification for the upcoming season, it is evident that the Portuguese star doesn’t fancy playing in the second-tier European competition. Thus, the 37-year-old informed the Manchester club of his wish to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Ivan Toney, who has been dubbed to have the “mindset of a lion”, according to Brentford manager Thomas Frank, could be of interest to Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. The striker impressed as he helped the Bees finish in mid-table last season, by scoring 12 goals in 33 Premier League games (stats via transfermarkt).

According to The Mirror, Manchester United are keeping an eye on Ivan Toney, in case the Portuguese forward leaves. The English striker has attracted the interest of multiple Premier League including the Red Devils. Newcastle United and Leeds United are also reportedly keen on signing the forward. However, Brentford have slapped a £40m price-tag on the 26-year-old.

Why Signing Ivan Toney Would Be Better Than Keeping Ronaldo?

Cristiano Ronaldo is known as Mr Champions League, because of his monumental records in the competition. Ronaldo is the all-time record goal-scorer of the coveted European club competition, with a mammoth 140 goals and 5 CL titles. Moreover, since he began his senior career, there hasn’t been a single season when he didn’t feature in the Champions League.

Recent reports were circulating that a Saudi Arabian club had made a humongous offer to buy the striker from Manchester United which he rejected. Ronaldo’s recent transfer request has allowed some clubs to explore their options in a bid to sign the Portuguese legend. Chelsea did consider a move for the former Real Madrid striker but manager Thomas Tuchel decided against it.

Ronaldo’s age puts some pressure on the managers as they have to build the team that is best suited to the 37-year-old and that can sometimes force the managers to abandon their preferred systems. That can, in turn, end up causing more harm to the team’s collective results as the rest of the team struggles to fit into the system.

In the last term, Ivan Toney scored 14 times and offered 6 assists as Brentford comfortably staved off relegation and it is being reported that the Englishman may fit the bill at Manchester United. The Bees will be reluctant to lose the English forward as he is such a key figure in Thomas Frank’s side. But there is a belief in West London that at least one bid could come in for the highly-regarded frontman before the window closes.

Sources also claim that Leeds United, Newcastle United and West Ham United are also keen on the Brentford marksman. A potential move to Old Trafford depends on the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial.

The 26-year-old appeared on the radar of many clubs over a year ago, when he scored 33 goals and gave 10 assists in 48 Championship matches (stats via transfermarkt). His signing would help United to move closer to Ten Hag’s most recent setup at Ajax, in which he juxtaposed the team’s precise possession play with a direct forward outlet in the form of Sebastien Haller.

Toney has taken well to the Premier League not just in terms of his goal-scoring numbers, but also with respect to his all-round game. His ability to hold up the ball and bring the likes of Bryan Mbeumo into play has caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs.

United boss Erik ten Hag confirmed ahead of United’s pre-season game against Liverpool that the Red Devils are still looking for an attacker, and that would only be accelerated should Ronaldo opt to leave the club. Despite the transfer request, Ten Hag has insisted that Ronaldo will be going nowhere.

The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo could help Ten Hag to build a team exactly the way he prefers. The Dutch manager will get the time to understand the players in his squad and make the right changes so that he can get the best out of them.

However, the Red Devils must first provide a suitable striker for the Dutchman to succeed and that looks like a tough job for United at the moment.  Should Manchester United move for Ivan Toney, they are certain to face competition, with Newcastle, Leeds and West Ham all in the market for a striker of his profile. With three years remaining in his current contract, it seems as though the London club hold all the cards.
