Man United Amongst Leading Candidates to Sign Highly-Rated Championship Forward as Reported by Romano

Malcolm Ebiowei, Manchester United, Crystal Palace

According to latest reports, Manchester United are interested in signing Derby County forward Malcolm Ebiowei. His playing time under Derby manager Wayne Rooney has compelled other clubs to take notice of his skills and the potential he has.

Wayne Rooney’s Derby side almost accomplished the unthinkable in the Championship. Their brave effort to avoid relegation even after getting a 21-point deduction has led to the discovery of Malcolm Ebiowei. He started in 11 of the 16 games he played for the English side in the Championship, scoring one goal and assisting twice (stats via Transfermarkt).

According to Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are one of the leading candidates to secure the signature of Malcolm Ebiowei. However, the Red Devils will face competition from Crystal Palace, who are also amongst the favourites to sign the 18-year-old.

French outfit AS Monaco are also said to be monitoring the forward but a move to the Premier League looks more tempting to the youngster. Crystal Palace attackers Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew are both in their 30s and have one year left on their contract. Moreover, the Eagles would like a backup option for Jean-Philippe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard.

On the other hand, the Red Devils have confirmed the departure of Edinson Cavani and it is unlikely for Anthony Martial to stay. Cristiano Ronaldo is the only striking option left at Old Trafford as of now. Ten Hag’s side will need good squad depth in their squad to compete for trophies next season and. Ebiowei may not go straight into the senior team but he will develop his potential with United’s youth squad.

Everyone is aware of how successful United’s youth system has been. They recently won the FA Youth Cup which is proof of a side filled with quality and potential. The Derby attacker could add a lot more to this side and potentially play for the senior team one day. It is always better for clubs to have players get promoted from the academy into the senior team.

Does It Make Sense For Manchester United To Sign Malcolm Ebiowei?

Wayne Rooney was full of praise when asked about Ebiowei. This is what he had to say about the youngster:

“First of all, his attitude is very good. He has got an enormous amount of ability, he is brave, he will take the ball, he is not afraid to take players on, to get tackled, to make mistakes. So he has got a really bright future.”

Having players come from the academy into the senior squad ultimately saves the transfer budget and expenses of the club. In addition, a youth player always understands the philosophy of the club and is most of the time moulded in such a way that it suits the club’s requirements.

A club like Manchester United will certainly want to snatch a potential starkid before any of their rivals do. Malcolm Ebiowei might well surpass Charlie McNeil and Joe Hugill who are doing very well in the academy. The 18-year-old striker may even get an occasional feature in the senior team after a couple of years at the Old Trafford.

A move to Manchester United will be hugely beneficial for Malcolm Ebiowei on an individual level. There are high chances that he may not be much involved with United’s senior team in the upcoming season.

Rather, it is much more likely that Ebiowei will get more minutes with the senior team at Crystal Palace. Barring that in mind, he might lean towards a move to Selhurst Park. However, there is no doubt he will have a chance to grow steadily at Old Trafford. United may not want to miss out on a future star and should do their best to sign any potential prospect.
