Following a string of poor outings, the promising performance against Liverpool saw Manchester United secure a compelling 2-1 victory over their rivals as the Red Devils registered their first points of the league campaign on Monday.

With numerous big names having been dropped alongside several players rising to the occasion, manager Erik ten Hag will be keen on building on the momentum, with the team expected to gradually improve on their displays over the coming weeks.

A tenacious start to the game saw the Red Devils impose themselves on the visitors from the first minute. Having attempted to exploit Liverpool’s weakness down the left-flank within the defensive third throughout the game, an exceptional bit of play saw Jadon Sancho open the goal-scoring in the 16th minute after Anthony Elanga’s attempt saw him hit the post minutes earlier.

Failing to gain control of the game, whilst being continually exploited in defensive transitions, the visitors struggled for cohesion for the majority of the second half.

Introduced at the half-time break, Anthony Martial played a pivotal role in United’s second goal on the evening; finding Marcus Rashford’s searing run in behind Liverpool’s defence in the 53rd minute. Following relentless pressure, the visitors finally succeeded in finding the back of the net through Mohamed Salah’s header, although they failed to improve on their collective display throughout the ninety minutes.

Facing a decent Southampton side next Saturday, Ten Hag will be keen on maintaining the continuity in performance and personnel moving forward. With the club expected to acquire new signings before the end of the window, United will be looking to gain consistent points moving into a congested run of fixtures.
