Manchester United Looking at a Move For 32-year-old German Shotstopper: Good Competition for De Gea?

Manchester United, transfer, summer players leave, summer midfielders, right-back

It is an open secret that the Red Devils are searching for another goalkeeper who will not only be a backup to David de Gea but will also provide competition to the Spaniard. With Dean Henderson  on loan this summer, the Red Devils are looking to bring in an experienced back-up option for David de Gea. Dean Henderson had a breakout season with Sheffield United under Chris Wilder in the Premier League which led to United recalling him to provide backup for a struggling De Gea. But his presence certainly made the Spaniard get back to his best. The 20-time English champions have been linked with a number of names, including , Daniel Bachmann, Thomas Strakosha and Yann Sommer. David de Gea’s poor performances at the start of the season have made Erik ten Hag push for legitimate competition to the Spaniard in the squad.

Player Profile

Kevin Trapp is fearless when inside his own penalty area and United will benefit from having a goalkeeper who can react quickly to different situations and put himself in harm’s way. David De Gea is often criticized for not having command over his penalty box and defense. The German national is a renowned shot stopper and boasts good vision that enables him to make strong saves from all varieties of shots on goal. He has great reflexes that enable him to stop opponents’ chances from in and outside the box similar to De Gea. Trapp would come with plenty of experience, having played in both the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. He also fits the Ten Hag system far better than De Gea does. Trapp is equally adept at pulling off crowd-pleasing, acrobatic saves as he is doing the basics well and not attempting anything too risky.

He wants a top number 2 who could threaten De Gea’s in the team and Manchester United have even increased their budget to find such a goalkeeper. Trapp was a big part of the reason why Eintracht Frankfurt won the Europa League last season and has two years left on his contract. Any move could also depend on Manchester United providing him with assurances about game time ahead of the World Cup. Erik ten Hag seemingly not fancying Tom Heaton as a number two, the need to acquire a new shot-stopper is there for all to see.

The 32-year-old has won six caps for Germany and has previously played for Paris Saint-Germain and Kaiserslautern, over a career in which he has played comfortably over 400 games. At this point, United would take any competent goalkeeper in order to challenge for De Gea’s spot. At the very least, it’d make the Spaniard work that little bit harder for his position.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen what sort of football Ten Hag decides to play. His teams are known for playing out from the back and starting the build-up from the goalkeeper. De Gea has received criticism in the past for not having great ball-playing skills and subsequently making mistakes while passing to the defenders, which led to opposition goals. Hence, a strong start from Trapp could give him a chance to take up the number one keeper spot.
