United Keeping Tabs on €70Million Rated German Winger With Uncertainty Looming Over Greenwood’s Future

Serge Gnabry, Manchester United

According to reports in Germany, Manchester United are keeping an eye on Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry. The German player has been involved in negotiations for a contract extension at the Bundesliga club for several months now, but talks are nowhere near a conclusion.

Serge Gnabry made his professional debut with Arsenal in 2012, after joining them as a 16-year-old kid from Stuttgart in 2011. He made a total of 10 appearances for the Gunners before leaving in 2016 due to lack of game-time under then-manager Arsene Wenger. He moved back to Germany joining Werder Bremen and a season later, Munich signed him up.

The German youngster further went on loan to Hoffenheim after moving to the Allianz Arena. The player himself wanted the move to gain vital first-team experience. It helped him reach his full potential and make his way into the Munich first-team.

Serge Gnabry has made 154 appearances for Bayern Munich, with 38 assists and 59 goals to his name. The 2016 Rio Olympics’ top scorer has won three Bundesliga titles with the Bavarian giants and is on course to win the fourth. He has also won two German Cups, a Champions League title, a FIFA Club World Cup and a Super Cup.

Now, according to Sky Germany (via The Metro), Manchester United are keeping an eye on Serge Gnabry. The Red Devils could make a move for him in case talks fail between Bayern Munich and the player. United are looking to solidify the team in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Serge Gnabry came under the radar of Manchester United after Bayern failed to come to terms with the player’s demands. The 26-year-old wants parity from the Bundesliga leaders with teammates Kinglsey Coman and Leroy Sane (approx. £13million per year). Gnabry, who has entered into the final 18-months of his contract, wants to stay in Munich but only if his wage demands are met.

He is currently the second-highest goal-scorer for the German giants with 12 goals in all competitions. Only Robert Lewandowski is ahead of him with 24 hits. Former West Brom manager Tony Pulis once made a sharp criticism of the player’s performance for not being good enough. But Gnabry has, since then, significantly improved his game, becoming a key player for Munich and winning multiple silverwares.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann also wished for the player to stay at Munich and continue his fine work for the club:

“I would like nothing more than that he extended. He has familiar people with whom he talks about it, and we at the club also have other people with Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic who take care of having these conversations. I try to help him so that he gets better and better.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United have been struggling to get results this season. They have underperformed despite the big-name arrivals last summer. A shocking FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough on penalties last week has only made things worse for the club.

However, the Red Devils aren’t the only club eying the German though. Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also keeping close tabs on the player’s future. The summer would be the last opportunity for the Bundesliga giants to negotiate and convince him to stay as other teams would be able to sign him on a pre-contract come next January, and the player could leave for free.

With an uncertain future looming on the horizon for Greenwood, Manchester United could bolster their attacking width by acquiring the services of Serge Gnabry. The winger has some experience playing in the Premier League, but United would need to, at least, qualify for the Champions League to land the Bayern star. They currently stand fourth in the table, but Arsenal and Tottenham can surpass them having played lesser games.
