Manchester United Contemplating Making an Official Bid for €65m Rated Bundesliga Star

Christopher Nkunku, Manchester United

According to reports in Germany, Manchester United have apparently registered their interest in signing French wonderkid, Christopher Nkunku. A new era dawns upon United with the arrival of Erik ten Hag and the Red Devils are in the market for numerous signings to bolster their chances of success next season.

RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku has enjoyed a stellar 2021/22 season for the German club, having finished with 35 goals and 25 assists in 51 appearances across all competitions (stats obtained from Transfermarkt). This means the Frenchman has been involved in a little more than one goal contribution each game.

Nkunku finished fourth in the list of Bundesliga top-scorers, right behind the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Patrick Schick and Erling Haaland. The 24-year-old made a mark in every competition he participated in, ranking a collective second among the scorers in the DFB Pokal where he scored 4 and assisted 3 goals, finishing third in the goals tally of the UEFA Europa League with 4 goals and scoring 7 in the UEFA Champions League.

It comes as no surprise that several big-name clubs have come knocking at Leipzig’s door. According to Sky Sports Germany (via Metro), Manchester United are looking to launch an offer for Christopher Nkunku next week. The report states that the player’s representatives have already been in contact with the Red Devils over a potential move.

Former interim manager Ralf Rangnick recommended the 24-year-old forward and new manager Erik ten Hag also backs the move. When asked about the rumours of a potential transfer, the Frenchman has refused to rule out a move away from RB Leipzig. Nkunku said:

“I don’t close any doors. Everything is possible in football.”

“It’s flattering to have the biggest clubs in the world interested in me.”

However, United might face tough competition from PSG, Nkunku’s boyhood club, and even Chelsea who are also eager to improve their team’s frontline after a trophy-less season. The Leipzig number 18 is usually deployed as a second striker in a flowing 3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2 system alongside a prolific Andre Silva in a classic big man – little man front two partnership.

Another key factor about the former PSG man’s game is his versatility. Nkunku has features as a central attacking midfielder and can even fill in on either side of the wing if the need arises, as he has displayed for Leipzig. His versatility, along with his rapid pace and a creative eye for goals and assists can be a massive asset for any club in the world.

With as many as 10 players leaving the United fold in the upcoming transfer window, a dire need for reinforcements plagues the United board. With reports suggesting that Manchester United might look at young and upcoming talents to reinforce their side next season, since that’s what Erik ten Hag is known to do best, a marquee signing such as that of Christopher Nkunku can be seen as a huge boost in terms of both morale and perhaps, the goals and assists output next season.
