Man United Eyeing Watford Winger As An Attacking Option; Does This End Their Pursuit of £35 million Rated Attacker?

Manchester United have been reportedly linked with Watford forward Ismaila Sarr in the current summer transfer window.

With Anthony Martial’s recent injury woes and Cristiano Ronaldo’s uncertainty at the club remaining persistent, United are eyeing offensive options and have recently turned their attention to the Watford right-winger to bolster their squad and increase depth on the right-hand side of the pitch as the season progresses.

According to 90min journalist Graeme Bailey, the Red Devils have shortlisted the Senegalese forward in their exhaustive list of potential attack-minded players they could sign. Sarr has been linked to the Manchester club numerous times, but the move has never materialized as the United brass have opted to recruit other players in his stead.

Sarr is an out-and-out right winger, a position United have been struggling to fill out. Marcus Rashford has been deployed on the right wing in the past where his output wasn’t nearly as productive as his exploits on the left, While Jadon Sancho was signed to operate on the right but has found his footing best while running down the left.

Therefore it becomes crucial that United sign a right-sided threat. Negotiations with Ajax for Antony seem to be going nowhere with United having their bids rejected multiple times and being asked for exorbitant amounts of money from the Dutch champions.

The Senegalese winger was brought up in conversation very recently after he scored from his own half against West Bromwich Albion in the club’s opening fixture in the Championship. The United board and the new manager Erik ten Hag will be reassured by the fact that the player has significant PL playing experience and decent numbers to show for it.

The 24-year-old has scored 10 goals and assisted 8 times in 50 Premier League games across his career (stats obtained from Transfermarkt).

The fans might be concerned about the player’s lack of goals and assists and reasonably so. United themselves saw the majority of their goals scored by the lone striker up top last season, Cristiano Ronaldo, with wingers Sancho, Rashford, and Anthony Elanga unable to put up significant numbers.

United football director John Murtough and co. have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Ajax wonderkid Antony, a travesty surely bringing Ten Hag annoyance, especially since the club also looks unlikely to secure the signing of their priority target, FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, a player the manager was planning to shape the team around.

While the Ismaila Sarr transfer links seem to remain omnipresent almost every season, Manchester United have also been strongly linked to PSV Eindhoven star, Cody Gakpo for a fee of around £35 million [Sky Sports].

Sarr would arrive at Old Trafford with a shining recommendation letter, having his ex-teammate Ben Foster describing him as a “freak” of talent with “scary” ability. It is understandable why the winger’s goal output might not be that high, playing for a club that usually struggles in the English top flight.

The player can also slot in at centre-forward if the need arises as he has done so numerous times in the past for Watford. Sarr has shown immense talent playing for Watford, with only the volume of goals and assists lacking in his resume. If no other option works, welcoming the winger into the club might just work out for United.
