Manchester United Register Interest in Highly-Rated Portuguese Centre-back, Talks Already Held

David Carmo, Manchester United

Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign SC Braga centre-back David Carmo. The Red Devils want to bolster their defensive options in the upcoming transfer window and the Portuguese defender has been shortlisted as a potential target.

Jurrien Timber is Ten Hag’s priority target at centre-back this summer. However, there have reports of hesitance from Timber in moving to Old Trafford and therefore, the Red Devils are weighing up secondary options, should they fail to sign the Ajax defender.

The Dutchman’s irresolution in joining United might be because of the possibility of losing his place in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad later this year. Thus, the 22-year-old Braga centre-back could be a tempting prospect as the Red Devils need to significantly improve their options at centre-half ahead of the new season.

According to Manchester Evening News, United are said to have already held two rounds of talks with David Carmo for a potential move. The Portuguese has been identified as a fall-back option alongside Villarreal’s Pau Torres this summer. Having spent a year out due to an ankle injury, an impressive 21/22 campaign saw Carmo establish himself as a regular starter for Braga across all competitions.

Moreover, having been previously linked with a move to United, the centre-back certainly retains admirers within the club. Expected to be sold by SC Braga for less than his release clause (€40m), Carmo – previously linked with a move to Liverpool – is expected to make an ambitious switch this summer, with many clubs likely to line up for his services.

A Physical Technician

A towering figure at 6’5” feet, few defenders of his physicality boast the complementary technical attributes of the 22-year-old at the highest level of the game. A left-footed centre-back, the Portuguese is known for his ball-progression attributes alongside playing line-breaking passes into the second phase of the build-up.

Additionally, possessing a unique vision alongside an enviable ability to dribble through the lines and pick out his teammates in attacking spaces, Carmo is likely to suit a team requiring their centre-backs to remain technically composed and secure in possession.

Moreover, boasting incredible aerial ability, the defender towers over most Primeira Liga strikers. Unafraid of an aerial challenge, the Braga defender is renowned for his consistency in winning aerial duels on the pitch, serving as a defender capable of helping his team retain possession further up the pitch during attacking set-pieces.

Weaknesses & Verdict

While Carmo is ready to take the big step this summer, the centre-back’s robust yet bulky physicality fails him in generating the pace and agility required to deal with quick-witted and pacy forwards. Yet to perfect the art of tackling, the Portuguese has regularly been found mistiming his tackles, while his tendency to defend aggressively has contributed to his positional vulnerability during games.

Nevertheless, with a potential to wipe off his weaknesses given his tender age and promising ability, Carmo is likely to fulfill expectations at a big club over the coming years. While Manchester United are expected to remain insistent on securing the services of Timber this summer, David Carmo is more than capable of further developing his game at Old Trafford, provided the club wants an additional budget-friendly option at centre-back.
