Manchester United Lodge a Second bid For £34m Atletico Madrid Star; Perfect Competition For Wan-Bissaka ?

Kieran Trippier, United

Manchester United have kick-started their transfer window by making active moves on multiple transfer targets simultaneously. According to a report from the Italian outlet La Gazzetta Dello Sport via (h/t The Express), United have submitted a second bid to Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier.

This move comes in the backdrop of Red Devils actively looking for reinforcements for various positions to build on their solid Premier League campaign of last season where they finished second only to a record-breaking Manchester City squad.

The 30-year-old English right-back has been a regular starter for the Rojiblancos since his move from Tottenham back in 2019. He played 28 times for Atletico Madrid helping them win the La Liga title for the first time in eight years and in doing so, has also bagged 6 assists, demonstrating his attacking prowess.

Playing under Diego Simeone whose team is known for their sturdy defence, the Englishman has greatly improved the defensive side of his game as well.

Former players and pundits have also talked a great deal about this improvement since his move to Spain under Simeone. Gareth Southgate’s unending trust in him to start for England even though he has so many fullbacks at his disposal is further attestation to Trippier’s skills. Not only that he is also a highly versatile player, having played in midfield for England at the 2018 World Cup, and starting at left-back for England in their opening match at Euros 2020 against Croatia.

The right flank conundrum of Manchester United has been in public display for the whole of the 20/21 season. As a result, Manchester United hierarchy are aware of the improvements they need to bring to their squad to truly challenge Manchester City and Liverpool next season. Manchester United are looking to desperately end their wait for their first silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and are happy to back their manager with the funds needed to do that and their early transfer window actions signify just that.

According to the report, the second bid for Trippier by the United is of around £21.5 million after Atletico Madrid previously rejected their first bid of around £10 million. The report also states that Atletico might be positive about accepting the deal as they looking to make some changes in their squad ahead of next season and freeing up some funds allows them to do just that. Other clauses and details of the transfer are still unknown.

This deal seems like a probable one as a report in MEN says that the player and his family have shifted back to Manchester and all indications point to him being interested in a move. His switching to his England phone number and his wife’s increasing interactions with partners of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw adds fuel to the fire.

Kieran Trippier would certainly represent a worthwhile addition to the present United squad. Given the post-pandemic economic climate in the country, the price at which the deal is being mentioned represents a really good opportunity for United to add value to their squad. His understanding of the game also helps the youngsters and balances the inexperience in the squad and that is something that this United squad needs.

The only question here is the manager’s dilemma: as to who he should start with next season, between Wan Bissaka or Trippier? There is also a possibility of playing both of them together for United as Trippier can also play in midfield, Ole could perhaps start him at RM in front of Wan Bissaka at RB. His inclusion also offers flexibility to the manager to experiment with different formations like three at the back. There are also rumours about Ole considering Aaron Wan Bissaka at centre-back next season which might better explain United’s move for Trippier.

Trivial speculations aside, this transfer is a move in the right direction for Manchester United and something that substantially improves their squad’s strength. All eyes on Ole Now if Woodward can pull this off along with the Sancho deal obviously.
