Manchester United Set £51m Price Tag on Midfielder Being Targeted by PSG ; Should United Sell This Summer?

Paul Pogba, PSG, Manchester United, Arsenal

Manchester United have reportedly set a £51 million price tag on PSG target Paul Pogba, according to reports in France. Pogba is yet to sign a renewal with only one year remaining in his contract. Though the Red Devils are keen to hold onto the player, they also do not wish to make the same mistake of letting him off on a free transfer when his contract expires next season.

Paul Pogba’s situation and his stellar performances in the Euro 2020 cup for France have attracted the interests of PSG, Juventus, and Real Madrid. The Frenchman started his career in Man Utd’s youth academy, before leaving for Juventus in 2012 on a free transfer. The English club then had to pay a record fee of £89 million in 2016 to regain his services. This was a world record fee at the time and the highest in the club’s history so far.

Pogba’s performances in his five seasons at Old Trafford have undulated from time to time. Things looked blue for the player, especially during Mourinho’s charge at the helm. However, Pogba remains a crucial first-team starter ever since his arrival and remains an asset for the team, especially with his ability to play almost anywhere in the midfield.

Last season was pretty decent for the French midfielder, scoring three goals and registering five assists in 26 league appearances, despite missing some games to injuries. However, a lack of trophies at club level might might motivate him to look at chances elsewhere. In the last five seasons, United have managed to win only the Carabao Cup and the Europa League trophy in his time at the club and this might have an impact on his decision to not renew at United.

There had been hints of a potential move since last year, after his agent, Mina Raiola, stated that the player was unhappy at the club and his time at Old Trafford was over.

Recently, the Mirror cited the French outlet L’Equipe in a report, stating that ‘Manchester United chiefs are willing to part ways with the midfielder for the correct fee’. The report states that the Red Devils have set a £51million price tag for the midfielder. It also went on to state that PSG are not put off by the price tag and will prepare a £51million bid to sign the Frenchman, who is said to be ‘seduced’ by the prospect of a Ligue 1 switch this summer.

The price tag comes as a shock and is a bargain for the French club. However, the move could be considered wise though a reluctant one on United’s part, as they would otherwise see the player leave for free next season if he refuses to sign a new contract this season.

PSG have been on a roll this summer transfer, already securing four high-profile signings for different positions. They seem to be the likeliest destination for the player at this stage if things progress. Real Madrid and Juventus, despite their interests, are both coming off from a difficult season and may be unable to pay the fee. Although, whether or not United should sell Pogba this summer remains a debate.

The Frenchman is someone who brings quality in the middle area and his recent Euro 2020 cup performances have been nothing short of extraordinary. He would leave a hole in the team if Man Utd do indeed sell him. However, critics have often pointed out his inability to deliver consistency in form and Bruno Fernandes’ spectacular performances have often been praised as what Man United wished for when signing Pogba.

Moreover, Pogba is on the higher-end of the pay scale considering his wages. Selling him would free up the club’s wage budget. This gives the prospect of signing a new high-earning player, with more consistent form and ability. Also, Man Utd are keen on signing 18-year-old French midfielder, Camavinga, but face stiff competition from PSG for the young starlet. Selling Pogba to PSG would rid Man Utd of the competition and the Red Devils would then have a replacement for Pogba if they manage to sign Camavinga through the process.
